timeline of making apple cider vinegar for the first time

pic 1 feb 10
pic 2 feb 20
pic 3/4 april 3
pic 5 april 6

Used a 1 gallon air lock mason jar
Filled half the jar with apple slices
1 cup of sugar per gallon of water (filtered)
A dash of finished acv to kick start the inoculation

After two weeks of the apples sitting you can remove them but I want this batch to be strong so I’m waiting for the apples to float to the bottom and for a mother to form. It’s funny to acknowledge the way you prefer to learn because I’m more so hands on then to read first, one of the days when I opened the jar I was like this smells a little like😏liquaaaa😏😏 then I did some research and found out it goes through a alc phase, my mind was blown😭(“yeast converting sugars in apple juice into ethanol”)

3 days in Cartagena Colombia

During this trip I had the chance to go crabbing and cook the crab I caught in the back of the restaurant.Catching the crab using a trap method with fresh caught fish, a cage, rope and a water bottle.Fish to lure, a cage to trap and a empty water bottle as a floatation device to mark where you placed your trap.

Visited @isladelpescador enjoyed fresh coconut, learned the traditional way to remove rice shells and got to see a small scale fish farm

Visited palenque which is one of the first free black cities, filled with rich culture and their own religion called Lumbalú( two main religions being Lumbalú and Catholicism).Palenque being a place of refuge for Africans that were enslaved by Spaniards founded by Benkos Biohó, finding refuge in nearby swamps and mountains. Benkos died loyal to his people, after signing a peace treaty the Spanish crown viewed him as too powerful so they found a way to incarcerate him.In exchange for his freedom the Spanish asked for enslavement for his people.Obviously declining the offer he was hung then cut in half and dragged across Cartagena, leaving a message for other enslaved people during the rebellion.Palenque being a place that only began receiving electricity and water during the 70’s, due to Antonio Cervantes(palenque boxer)winning the WBA light welterweight world title.Last slide being a picture of how traditional houses were built before electricity with materials such as cow dung, mud, wood and dried palm leaves. by @tripsalchemy

Second year attending and yet AGAIN a pleasure to be at @blackurbangrowers conference nothing like loving and learning from my people. I now have a new found love of Detroit, s/o to the farmers in the urban ag scene out there putting in the work, truly inspiring and to the community who continue to pour love into their home town.Everyone I met out there was kind and seemed to not only love their city but is highly informed on the history of it.THANK YOU to everyone I met and to those I didn’t I hope to meet you next year🥲 by @tripsalchemy

Today’s word of the day is gratitude.Beyond grateful to spend my 23rd birthday in Peru.To learn the ways of the Inca people, how their irrigation systems work being in a place that rarely sees rain, learn about their funeral ceremonies and what’s offered to their dead to take in the after life(hair offerings, food, clay figured etc). The way the bricks of the pyramid were positioned at an angle when built in case of natural disasters. To visit a popular winery and learn how their pisco is made!I pray that 23 is good to me and to continue my travels to further my knowledge in ethnobotany. So that this knowledge can be passed to others for generations to come and to get back to our roots of being intertwined with Mother Nature. by @tripsalchemy

It’s interesting to meet farmers and hear their backstory and how they ended up farming.I feel like I’m always meeting older people who had lived many lives some parallel and some the complete opposite.Funny because I always get asked what made me become a farmer literally everytime I announce my occupation and it’s like people went and lived 20+ years in a diff life then chose farming and I’m doing it in my 20’s lol but my answer to that question is what else would I be doing rn😭

My dream is to become a ethnobotanist but I honestly feel like one right now, I typed too much to go into that rant too so goodbye lol by @tripsalchemy

Big Zinnia harvest today!!

Last two pics are a before and after the harvest and prune

One of the biggest things I’ve learned about farming is that it takes a village!Everyday in life I’m reminded of the importance of community (GOOD COMMUNITY) because without it none of this will be possible. Before I started farming I imagined owning my own farm and working it alone, now that i work on a farm I can’t imagine why I ever wished that on myself😭.At this farm I started working alone and I enjoyed the isolation being 1 on 1 with the plants, but currently truly grateful to share the space with Cat and for all of her knowledge!!And to learn something new everyday from other farmers and people in the ag space! Literally met someone today who owns an apothecary she came to the farm and identified a tree (mimosa)that blooms a flower that’s a good antidepressant, it’s people like that who I aspire to be, grounded, present and in tune with universe by @tripsalchemy

This is more than just growing food it is honoring and restoring the land our ancestors bled for.It is an act of worship to God by serving God’s creation. It is being in tune with your environment, who you share it with and all of its seasons. It is freedom to provide for yourself, family and community. The earth is bountiful and has given us everything we need to survive do not turn your back on Mother Earth and do not think you need more than what she has given you.More importantly it is peace🌱 by @tripsalchemy
