I promised myself I’d return to social media this birthday, I just didn’t expect it to look like this. So…hi. Sorry for the sadness?

1st pic: the last my Mimi and I ever took together. 2nd: her in all her beauty. I considered a 3rd from my birthday yesterday, but a slow pan across a mortuary’s casket showroom felt a little grim.

I don’t know how to write this, so I’m just going to start typing.

By definition, Mimi was my childhood nanny. In reality, *she* was my childhood. My best friend. And one of the most influential people in my life. There was no me without her. There still isn’t. She’s responsible for so many pieces to my mosaic, big and small. She’s the reason I love a good salad, British humor, joy in the little things, and see animals and humans as equals. She’s the reason I love Disney, and did everything in her power to convince me magic was real (once at a craft store, 4-year-old me SCREAMED at a Maleficent doll in a display case to “go away and leave Aurora alone” — so Mimi arranged for the staff to hide her upon our next visit to make me believe I scared her off).

She turned every activity—errands, chores, bath time, bedtime—into an adventure. She even turned sadness into a game that only ended when laughter won.

For years, she’s been in a brutal battle with dementia. And Monday, June 2nd, I got the call I’d been dreading—her granddaughter saying to get to Sacramento, as Mimi was fading fast.

All day, I silently repeated, “You can’t go anywhere yet, I’m on my way,” convinced we’d have some kind of cinematic goodbye: I’d walk in, grab her hand, she’d give me one last squeeze, then head off to Heaven. But life isn’t a movie, and an hour before I got to her that night, my Mimi passed away.

Grief is wild. There’s a hole in my heart that feels irreparable, yet none of this feels real. I’m thankful she’s pain-free, yet selfishly wish she were still here. I cried when I started writing this, yet feel silly and overdramatic as I finish it. All I know for sure is I’m so grateful she existed.

Call your loved ones. Hug your family like it’s your last. Overuse “I love you” at all costs.

Hi I haven’t brushed my hair since Sunday. But here is the moment I felt halfway presentable this week. But like ONLY in this photo. Not any other time. And probably because I used a lighting effect. Me every time I’m trying to admire the Earth 😒

I’m a day late for #EarthDay, on purpose. We haven’t been treating Mother Nature kindly, and it’s abundantly clear she’s had enough. So let’s make everyday Earth Day; we are its guests, not the hosts. She deserves to enjoy us as much as we enjoy her.
....Even if she likes some of you less because you think pineapple belongs on pizza.

If I were to write a book at the end of my life, this past decade would be the one my grandkids think I’ve made up. There are some parts that even I have a hard time believing. But 2010-2020 was very real, and very much shaped me for life. What a freaking 10 years it’s been.
