After attending so many markets at @31staveopenstreet
I'm so excited to be on the vendor side of the table for the first time!

If you'd DEFINITELY like to purchase one I'd appreciate it you could let me know in advance since I'm going to have limited stock Saturday.

I had such an amazing time with @fern.and.aurora at their first ever Philippine Independence Day pop-up market!

If you haven't been, @fern.and.aurora is a Filipino owned desert shop located in Little Neck, NY right off the LIRR stop. They have a plethora of pastries and baked goods from croissants to mini cakes. Chef Cherry plays around with Filipino flavors inspiring a constantly rotating selection of delicious desserts, including their savory Adobo hand pie and Ube tiramisu. If you want authentic Filipino flavors, this is the place to go.

Their vibe is also so much fun with Filipino inspired decor, an art wall featuring local artists (see if you can spot my art and tag me if you do!), books, mini games, and barongs for those looking for them!

Thanks so much, @fern.and.aurora for inviting me to your event! It was an honor to be included in your celebration.

(Yes, this is still Queens!)

I was lucky enough to have @djablosauce as a market buddy for the first time. We left some stickers in Fern and Aurora's trinket exchange boxes for some lucky folks to find 😋 - Tag us if you grab one!

I was so excited to meet another vendor, @lkape_barako who had Filipino Barako coffee beans! They are very specific to the Philippines and have a nice rich taste to them. Previously I've only been able to get them the two times I visited the Philippines so I'm excited to have a Barako dealer in NYC! ☕ taken in Fern & Aurora by @trishamarietagle

Lola's Love - Watercolor/Gouache

This is a painting of a Filipino stew called dinuguan. My grandmother passed away in the Philippines this past April. While speaking with one of my aunts, she told me she remembers my grandmother's dinuguan being the best of all the sisters (my grandmother has 5 sisters, all amazing cooks and my aunt is a chef so that's a big deal!). To remember my grandmother, I wanted to capture that love in a painting of this dish. Food is a major love language in the Philippines. You cook for those you love, layering love like you layer flavors. I've also incorporated sampaguita flowers, the national flower of the Philippines as another ode to our culture. -- This is my love letter to you, Lola Gloria. This is more than just a dish, it's embracing our culture and the legacy you left with us. Mahal kita.

🇵🇭 Dinuguan is very specific to the Philippines and its most unique ingredient is pork blood, which acts as one of the bases of the dish, along with vinegar, green pepper, bay leaf, pork, onion, and a dish isn't Filipino workout garlic🧄 It's eaten with white rice and at parties it's so good with puto (yes, Spanish speakers, you read that right). Puto is a small Filipino stand rice cake often with a slice of melted cheese on top! It's delicious and the slight sweetness pairs well with the sourness of the dinuguan. It's the perfect vehicle to sop up the rest of the sauce on your plate.

If you're new here... ⬇️

✨ Hello, I'm Trisha, a first gen Filipino-American born and raised in my beloved Queens, NYC. I just in the past few years started exploring representing myself in my art instead of only painting and drawing when commissions came around. Exploring between my healthcare related (not a nurse lol) 9-5 makes the process slow but I'm finding it meaningful and rewarding. Thanks for being here for the journey🫰🏼

P.S. Thank you, Tita @gingaroo for inspiring the dish for me to represent Lola Gloria 🙏🏼 I wish I could have spent more time with her.

🫙Art Jar Roulette - Entry 1: Penwork 🖊️
I’ve realized that my biggest hurdle in my art practice is the pressure to make every single page a masterpiece.

 So, I created ✨Art Jar Roulette ✨
- 2x a week, I'll pull a prompt from my jar of art exercises, mediums, and topics, dedicating a minimum 10 minutes to explore it. No over-thinking. No over-rendering. Just practice.

Today’s Prompt: Penwork!
💭 The Realization: I don't have nearly as much pen control as I thought and as an artist it's kind of hard to realize or even admit.

I’m a little nervous to share my weaknesses and challenges, but reflection and growth are the whole point of a journal, right?

What’s one thing you’ve been too afraid to practice lately? Let’s talk in the comments. 👇 by @trishamarietagle

Little update -- I recently moved out of the city and it's been a pretty tough transition. On top of that my art nook wasn't set up for months and my office felt cold and unwelcoming. I finally had time after Thanksgiving to unpack and set up everything and I'm determined to embrace art now more than ever as I adjust to life outside my beloved city.

✨ To everyone going through changes in life, I hope you find your cozy nook and find comfort through challenging times.

Stay cozy. Stay creative.

✨ You can take a city girl out of the city but you can't take the city out of a city girl ✨ 🌃

Nov 1 prompt - ✨botanical✨ - so I drew this flower I had been drying!

⏱️ Time limit 30-60 min max 💢

I've been looking for an art challenge since I now have more time to focus on art again and I'm trying to jump right into it after not having really painted or drawn for a year and a half. I was looking around for prompts and discovered this one that I liked just in time to start the month with this new medium I'm exploring!

So this month I'm doing a @gouachevember challenge where I'm using the prompts they provide to try to paint something small *almost* every day.

This is my second painting ever with gouache 😬 and I also just received the set of acryl gouache (aka acrylic gouache) that I ordered today so I decided to try that too!

You can really tell the difference when it comes to the color vibrance! ✨Acrylic Gouache✨, unlike regular gouache or watercolor, isn't meant to be diluted with water and also unlike the other two, once you put it down on the paper, you can't re-wet it to reactivate it so you actually need much more of the paint than I'm used to using AND it dries really quickly. I can definitely say as someone who isn't used to this type of paint, there's a major learning curve! 🫠

Anyway, let's hope I can manage to stick to this challenge!

🤯 So this is the first time I've ever painted with gouache and I'm typically a watercolor painter and that came from being a colored pencil artist. I really enjoy exploring other mediums and decided to record that process here!

🎨 NEW MEDIUM!
When testing out a new medium I like to use materials that are just above student grade so I still get some good quality pigments but I don't want to buy an entire set so I use a limited palette focusing on your primary colors and depend on my mixing capabilities to create all of the colors that I need. It's really good practice for bettering my mixing capabilities and color theory but also saved me money in case I don't love the medium I'm using. In this case I actually think I really like gouache!

💢 WATERCOLOR vs. GOUACHE 💢
So my first thoughts are the buildability of gouache. Something that is always a challenge with watercolor is the inability to build over what is there because it is so transparent and with more water comes more transparency. This is both positive because of the ability to play with the water as a technique but also a challenge because if you want to build you can't do that. This is where gouache offers a new set of capabilities that I didn't previously have and that I really enjoyed with this painting. Something I could not do with watercolor that I could do with wash is layer lighter colors over darker colors which makes my life so much easier because you can go back in with highlights whereas with watercolor you have to be super careful about that.

As you can see, the other medium I played a little with (and honestly didn't really like) is marker! It just doesn't go with my very detailed style of making art but I do like it as a challenge.

As an artist it was so hard being so busy that I didn't have time to paint or draw while I was planning my wedding. As someone who has a full time job, wedding planning took up all the rest of my time. However, I was able to funnel my creativity into the wedding and this is one of the places it turned up.

Hexagons were somewhat of a theme in my wedding starting with the unique hexagon shape of my engagement ring. I wanted to take that and incorporate it into my backdrop but all of the backdrops I found online didn't quite have what I was envisioning. I could have purchased a wooden frame and built the attachments but being that my father-in-law does woodworking, I thought it would be a nice project to ask him to help me with.

As someone who loves to be hands on with making and creating things, I had so much fun using the tools he had to help build the backdrop. The wood saw, blow torch, and staple gun are now tools I can say are under my own belt!

I remember trying to explain to people what I was envisioning and being so happy when we finally got the curtains and vines up for them to see it. As an artist it's so hard to explain what you're mulling over in your mind but so satisfying when you can bring that to life.

The day of the wedding, I made sure to ask my photographer to take a photo of us together in front of our project and I can't wait to get the photos back so I can see it!

🫠 When life gets busy it's hard to make time for the things you love. As a creative, I've grown to realize that even when I try to leave the creative realm behind it comes back to me with uncontrollable urgency. It is a natural part of my being that I really can't be without, and I've tried. Expressing creativity brings me joy even if it's in the simplest ways like doing a small 10 minute flower arrangement.

What are small ways you stay creative when life has you in a tizzy? 💕

💐This is a "vase" that I discovered on Amazon and what I'm liking about it so far is that I can make specific placements and spatial decisions for where I want the flowers to be without them flopping around. It's the perfect size for Trader Joe's mini bouquets which are $3.99 each and it's easy to change out the water so it doesn't get gross. It's only day 2 using it so we'll see how long they last. by @trishamarietagle
