Check out the really cool old-school elevator at the airbnb. There’s an outer door to get into the cabin and then you have to pull the doors shut yourself once you’re in. And then this grand stone staircase wraps around it … I had to be on the top floor right?

The elevator at my airbnb was busted on the day of my arrival in Trieste (that’s it with the double doors there.)

I wasn’t about to drag all of my luggage up 5 flights of stairs so I waited out the repair at the trattoria across the way. Decided on some orechiette, fried veg and a sampling of the local Friuli wine.

Pretty easy to fall in love at first sight with Trieste. Here’s a statue of James Joyce; he lived here for a while and worked on his most famous works while he was here. Did I get any writing done during my stay? Nope.

Looking down the Grand Canal, you see that church at the end with the dome? My airbnb is just behind it. Really lovely to be so close to this, makes for a nice walk every morning.

I always found Switzerland gorgeous but exploring Lauterbrunnen cemented its place in my mind (and heart) as one of the most beautiful places in the world.

One of the loveliest things about Switzerland is hearing the mellifluous ringing of cowbells throughout the valley. It’s a little like wind chimes: it’s sweetly calming. Of course around here, you also get the sounds of rushing waters from the rivers and waterfalls… equally calming for a Pisces like me.

Oh just a little cheese stand in the middle of the valley for hikers feeling a little peckish. Payment is honor system and I love that. I didn’t try it though, didn’t want to chance it since I had a lot of walking to do and I didn’t want to run into a toilet emergency.

Technically I’m lactose intolerant but I seem to do ok with European dairy products, so it makes me think it’s not really the lactose I have problems with but the additives that we have in American products.

Walking through Lauterbrunnen valley made me realize how underrated Switzerland is. Mountains on both sides of you, ahead, behind, while around you on the ground is a fertile, green valley filled with streams, adorable chalets, waterfalls and cows.

I mean it has its fans, I have a couple of friends that are crazy about it. And comparing it to other places I’ve been to, I can say that Switzerland is one of the prettiest countries (perhaps the prettiest) you can go to.

Something happened to me while I was climbing up the mountain… I had a panic attack. During the climb up to the top - which was all inside a cave btw and sort of goes on forever - I started getting claustrophobic. My heart started pounding, my head spinning and I started having trouble breathing… I hiked as fast as I could until I found some bit of open air and collected myself.

Not entirely new… a couple of years prior, I was on the metro in Paris and when the car became packed to the brim with people, I started having a panic attack and had to get off at the next station.

But before that? Never had a problem. It’s not lost on me that all this started happening after Covid, and I don’t know if the prolonged isolation triggered something, but now I don’t do so well in enclosed spaces or when there are too many people around.
