REVIEW-ish
This year’s Whitney Biennial sucked (again!). Not every piece in the show sucked, but nothing really stood out as exceptional in either concept or execution. Most pieces in the exhibit had nothing of note in either category. I could be long winded about the deliberate absence of technical virtuosity, of deliberately un-artful “art”, of facile ideas and unambiguous empty drama. Maybe it’s me. I am a contemporary artist. I love the potential of contemporary art. It’s more miss than hit, but when it hits, there’s nothing else like it.
At this show of such supposed high prestige one should see virtuosity. It’s not enough for there to be a grand concept (and there were no grand concepts). There ought to be a demonstration of unique talent, of above the pack ability and vision or else why did I come to see it? It should be art that really produces some kind of awe. Contemporary art can potentially be made out of anything. But justify whatever it is by making it special. By showing me something unparalleled. Let me say not everything at the show was shit. But only a little of what I saw could be described (by me) as good. None of it anywhere near great. Art shouldn’t be a joke. Even when it’s funny - and it can be funny - it shouldn’t be a joke. This show was a joke. Again.
This show validates the masturbatory buffoonery that most people think characterizes contemporary art. So goddamn disappointing. Again!
