POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I'm beyond relieved. Can't be "happy" that yet another queer Black woman was abused, but I'm so ECSTATIC she is back. She is with her wife. Starting the long road to recovery.

Twenty-five years already???
.
Twenty-five years ago today @wwpsay came back from a conference in Ukraine, and moved in with me and my children. Thirteen years ago today, we got married and were walked down the aisle by our children.

This cake is an homage to our beautiful polkadot wedding cake. Chocolate, spice, and lemon layers. Chocolate ganache filling. The pink, orange, blue, green, and purple wedding colours, (it was AWESOME!) and a touch of silver.
.
My Mom brought the knife down with her on the bus, and I'll be thinking of her when I use it tonight. She'll definitely understand when I have my cake and champagne BEFORE dinner! 😅

Just a reminder that it's not only "love is love". Trans people are in ever-increasing danger for who they are. Add in rampant racism, and it's even worse.
.
Celebrate who you are, but keep in mind what other people are facing. Listen to Black trans and non-binary voices. See how you can help. Vote. Donate. VOTE!

I forgot to say, the awesome pin, thank you @emmaline_947, is one of many from @radical_dreams_pins.

My mom would have been 99 today. So the (no strawberry for me) shortcake I make her every year got a little fancy with a fluted tart pan. She deserves it.

SERIOUSLY. Racism is off the charts and always has been. It's not just the South. It's not just your weird aunt. It's everywhere and we have to fight it. Every damn day.
.
Vote. Every election. Every level. Don't write in people who aren't on there, because that just feeds the right. Research and vote for the best person. (Not saying the left isn't racist, but the right is politically dedicated to it.)
.
Act. Call out the microaggressions and the blatant acts. Model better behaviour.
.
Read. Black people have been telling us for centuries what is going on. Buy books written by Black scholars and activists. Do the work.
.
Reflect. Racism is so prevalent that you don't see it. Your reading will reveal some pretty hard truths about your own beliefs and behaviours. Acknowledge and combat the racism inside you. Then atone for that by upping your efforts for Black liberation.
.
Apologize. If you mess up, don't deny it. Don't cry to people about it. Acknowledge. Apologize. Model better behaviour going forward. Try to undo the damage. Don't expect Black people to forgive you or hold your hand. Own your behaviour and it's consequences.
.
If we actually gave a damn and acted we could make a difference. It's not enough to be upset. Feeling bad doesn't help anyone.

This book is REALLY good. The story. The relationships. The cat.
.
But what makes it a book I read again and again is the disability rep.
.
I've never felt so seen by a book. It could be me. The heat intolerance. The lost friendships. The constant explaining because people don't understand and then having those same people think you are being melodramatic because you did what they asked and explained. The ways I adapt things to what I need. (The other half of my couch is filled with notebooks, various sweaters for when I get cold, whatever knitting projects I'm working on.) And WOW bang on on the way the medical community treats disability and chronic illness. (Which is basically, lots of abuse and no help)
.
So thank you, @taliahibbert . I see you. I appreciate you. Thank you for making me feel seen. 💜💜💜

CW: Asian hate and racism
.
Edit: these amazing buttons came from @kandkcreates
.
After my weekly plunge into the racist cesspool that is conversation with my father, I thought I'd post this.
.
Hate crimes against Asian people are on the rise. The only way to stop this is through ACTING.
.
The small casually racist microaggressions that you partake in or roll your eyes at feed into the larger issue.
.
Today I got to lecture (at an old man who never listened to his daughters and sure as hell doesn't listen now) about why hate crimes are not the fault of the victims.* "Why don't these immigrants ..." Blah blah blah racism racism racism.
.
1. Asian people who have lived in this country for generations are still called immigrants, but recent White immigrants are called "those nice people from (White mono-culture country)".
.
2. The majority of my immediate family lives in a small area of SW Ontario. No one comments "those White people always live so close to their families".
.
3. Asian people did not cause any epidemic, crop failure, or the solar eclipse. Two of those are laughably obvious to most people. Why isn't the third one?
.
4. Asian people feel unsafe because they ARE unsafe. We did that. So it's up to us to unmake it.
.
5. Correct racism when you see it. Call that shit out, even the "it's just a joke" things. (Insert 50 pages on how humour normalizes and propagates oppression). Check yourself. Because you don't know the harm you are doing. Check the politicians locally and nationally. Because racism is individual and systemic.
.
6. Ask your Asian friends if they are okay. If you can help. Or just listen. Because others have no idea what it's like.
.
*Hate crimes stem from unchecked racism and misogyny. Basically all hate crimes are committed by White men who have a long history of racism and domestic abuse. If we cared enough to deal with this early then hate crimes would plummet. But we are a continent built on genocide and slavery so we don't.
