Tromsø is one of the most magical places on Earth, but the Arctic environment and local communities need our respect.

Before you set off chasing the Northern Lights or exploring the fjords, take a moment to learn the simple habits that keep everyone safe and welcomed.

Locals notice these small gestures more than you might think.

Norway’s allemannsretten gives you incredible freedom to roam through the wild outdoors, but it comes with clear boundaries.

Setting up camp? Always keep a minimum distance of 150 meters from the nearest inhabited house or cabin.

Remember, private driveways, gardens, and farmland are never camping spots, no matter how breathtaking the scenery is.

Explore responsibly with guides inside the Tromsø App.

Polar nights mean dark Arctic roads, black ice, and tricky driving conditions.
Without a reflector, drivers often spot you just 25 meters away giving them barely any time to react.
Clip on a reflector and make yourself visible up to 140 meters!

Do what locals do: grab one at the nearest petrol station or supermarket before heading out into the dark.
Find verified nighttime safety tips on the Tromsø App.

Encountering reindeer along Arctic roads is an unforgettable experience, but remember: you are a guest in their natural home. 💚

Never slam on your brakes or block the road for a photo shoot!Slow down, keep a safe distance, and pull into a marked lay-by before stopping.

Arctic winter driving isn’t just regular driving with snow, it brings sudden whiteouts, invisible black ice, and zero visibility in extreme weather.

If you lack experience on icy mountain roads, opt for local tours or regional buses instead of self-driving.

If you do drive, never stop directly in the road fo taken in Tromsø, Norway by @tromso.app

Most people think the aurora is always green, but when the sky turns purple, something extraordinary is happening.

The colors above Tromsø aren’t random; they are a direct message from the atmosphere about solar storms and colliding particles.

Swipe through to decode what the sky is actually telling you! ➡️

#tromsoapp #aurorascience #tromsonorway #purpleaurora #northernlights

Every color in the northern lights comes from a specific gas glowing at a specific altitude.

Red comes from oxygen high up at 250-400 km, the classic green sits at 100-250 km, while blue and violet light up nitrogen way down at 80-120 km.

Altitude decides the entire show.

#tromsoapp #auroraborealis #northernlightsalert #spacefacts #visittromso

Green is the everyday aurora you see on most active nights in Tromsø.

Oxygen between 100 and 250 km releases its green light (558 nm) in just 0.7 seconds after being hit.

Plus, the human eye is naturally tuned to detect green in the dark better than any other color.

#tromsoapp #tromsø #greenaurora #chasingaurora #arcticnorway

True red auroras live at the very top, above 250 km.

Oxygen needs nearly two full minutes without bumping into any other particle to release that faint 630 nm red glow.

Lower down, denser air steals the energy before red light can ever form.

#tromsoapp #redaurora #astronomylovers #solarstorm #nightskynorway

Blue and violet only show up when a serious solar storm hits.

Only the most energetic charged particles can push deep enough into the atmosphere (down to 80-120 km) to excite dense nitrogen molecules and trigger those deep blue and violet rays.

#tromsoapp #aurorahunting #geomagneticstorm #tromsolove #auroraphotography

So why do you see purple?
Purple is actually a blend!
During a powerful geomagnetic storm, tall aurora rays stretch from the blue-violet nitrogen layer below straight up into the red oxygen above.

Blue and red light mix in your view, creating majestic purple ribbons over Prestvannet.

#tromsoapp #prestvannet #aurorawatch #tromsotrip #northernlightstour

Your phone camera often captures vivid purple when your eyes only see a pale, milky-grey haze.

Most people plan their Tromsø trip backwards and end up paying for it twice 💸🤦‍♂️
From 10 weeks out all the way to the night your flight touches down, here is the exact chronological order to lock everything in 🗓️✈️
Swipe through 👉

#tromsoapp #tromso #arcticnorway #travelhacks #norwaytravel

10 weeks out:
Lock in your flight and accommodation within the exact same hour 🏨✈️
Tromsø is a tight-knit island town of just 78,000 residents, and during winter peak season, beds run out way faster than flight tickets (especially during the last week of December and all through February)! ⏳🛏️

#tromsoapp #tromsotrip #wintertravel #travelplanning #visittromso

8 weeks out:
The herring decide the timeline, not the tour operators 🐋🌊 The whale watching window runs strictly from November to January.
Expedition boats leave from Skjervøy for a full day out on the fjords. If seeing orcas and humpbacks is the main reason you booked your flights, secure this spot before any other excursion 🚤❄️

#tromsoapp #whalewatching #orcas #arcticwildlife #skjervøy

6 weeks out:
Always grab the early morning departure for husky and reindeer camps 🐕🛷
The afternoon slot brings massive tour coaches and long lines for the sleds.
Going early guarantees a calm, uncrowded camp and that breathtaking Arctic blue light 🌌🦌

#tromsoapp #huskylove #reindeersledding #bluelight #arcticexperience

4 weeks out:
Hold your horses and leave the northern lights chase open ✋🌌
Now: Lock in anything with fixed capacity or set dates (boat charters, activity camps, day trips to Sommarøy) 🚐⚓

Later: Hold off on anything that depends 100% on clear skies ☁️❌

#tromsoapp #sommaroy #northernlightstour #norwaytrip #travelguide

2 weeks out:
Rent heavy thermal suits in town by the day (most guided outdoor tours supply them anyway).
What you definitely need to own beforehand is your own pair of strap-on ice spikes 🥾🧊
Tromsø pavements turn into polished sheets of ice starting in November, and local stores sell out during the very first cold snap! 🥶🛒

#tromsoapp #winterpacking #icespikes #nordictravel #tromsonorway

48 hours out:
Now it’s finally time to book the sky 🎯✨

Ten things worth doing in Tromsø - ranked by what actually feels worth your time, not by what sells best.

Most lists here read like a booking page.
This one is the order we’d do it in ourselves: one dark-sky night, one morning above the city, one long day at sea, and the rest on foot. Some of it costs nothing. One of it costs more than everything else combined.

Seasons, opening hours and walking routes for all ten are in the app. Save it before your trip - and tell us which one you’d cut.

#tromsoapp #tromsø #visittromso #northernnorway #arcticnorway

#1 Aurora The season runs from September to late March, and the single biggest mistake is staying in the city - the streetlights wash out everything but the strongest shows.

Get 30–40 minutes out along the coast road towards Kvaløya, Ersfjord or Sommarøy, then give it two or three hours.

Watch the cloud map rather than the KP number: a weak forecast under a clear sky beats a strong one behind cloud, every time. If your tour gets cancelled for weather, ask about the rebook policy before you pay twice.

#2 Storsteinen, #3 Sherpatrappa
Two ways up the same mountain.
Fjellheisen takes four minutes to 421 m and is worth timing for the low light rather than the middle of the day.

Right next to it, the Sherpatrappa runs 1200 stone steps built by Nepalese stonemasons - about an hour up, free, and busy for a reason. Bus 42 stops near the bottom of both, so you don’t need a car. Take one layer more than you think: it’s noticeably colder at the top.

#4 Whales
From November to mid-January, humpbacks and orcas follow the herring into the fjords, and boats leave straight from the harbour.
Plan for five to six hours at sea - that’s the part people underestimate. Dress for standing still on deck in wind, not for the photo. The whales decide the rest, so treat a sighting as likely rather than guaranteed, and pick a boat with an inside cabin if you’re not sure about the swell.

#5–#7
The centrum All three fit into one walk.
Storgata and the harbour side give you the wooden houses and the water at the end of every side street. When the weather turns (and it will) - Polaria covers Arctic nature and Perspektivet has th taken in Tromsø, Norway by @tromso.app

Planning your first trip to Tromsø? 🇳🇴
The travel brochures paint a perfect picture, but there are a few local realities they often leave out. We’re sharing 5 insider truths to help you prepare like a pro. Swipe through so you’re not caught off guard! 👉✨

#Tromso #VisitTromso #NorthernNorway #ArcticTravel #tromsoapp

1️⃣ Nature has its own schedule.

🌌 Don’t let a cloudy night ruin your trip. The northern lights are a natural phenomenon, meaning they are never 100% guaranteed, regardless of what a tour description might imply.

💡 Pro tip: Give yourself at least two nights to chase the lights, and remember that a clear sky is always better than a «strong forecast» hidden behind thick clouds!

2️⃣ Don’t wait for bright neon green to start taking photos!

📸 It surprises many, but a weak aurora often looks like a pale, grey smudge to the naked eye. Your phone or camera sensor is much more sensitive to the light spectrum.

💡 Pro tip: If you see a suspicious «cloud» in the night sky, point your camera at it, turn on night mode, keep your hands steady (or use a tripod!), and see what appears.

3️⃣ Forget what the thermometer says.

🥶 The coastal winds coming off the fjords can cut right through standard winter jackets.
A breezy -5°C here can feel drastically colder than a still -5°C back home.

💡 Pro tip: Your outer layer needs to be completely windproof. Focus on building a versatile layering system that you can add to or strip down, rather than relying on one giant, thick coat.

4️⃣ Timing is everything for whale watching.

🐋 Orcas and humpbacks visit the surrounding fjords to feast on herring, but they don’t stay all year.

💡 Pro tip: If seeing these giants is at the top of your bucket list, you need to plan your visit between November and mid-January. Always check the wildlife seasons before you book your flights!

5️⃣ The light here plays tricks on you.

☀️🌑 «Polar night» (late Nov to mid-Jan) isn’t 24 hours of pitch-black darkness; you still get a few beautiful hours of blue, magical twilight around midday.

Similarly, the «Midnight sun» in summer isn’t harsh daytime light; it’s an endless, golden hour where the sun hovers low on the horizon. taken in Tromsø, Norway by @tromso.app

Wondering if tonight’s the night? 🌌🇳🇴
Everyone checks “the forecast,” but most people are only looking at one number - and it’s usually not the one that matters. Here are the 7 numbers our app actually watches, broken down one by one. Swipe through 👉✨

1️⃣ The Kp Index is not a yes/no answer.
📈 It’s a 0-9 scale measuring how disturbed Earth’s magnetic field is - not whether you’ll see anything tonight. In Tromsø specifically, you don’t need a big storm: Kp 3+ is usually already enough, because we sit right under the auroral oval.

💡 Pro tip: Don’t wait for Kp 6 or 7 - those are rare. A quiet Kp 2-3 night with clear skies beats a loud Kp 6 night buried in cloud.

2️⃣ Clouds beat everything else on this list.

☁️ You can have a perfect Kp reading and still see nothing - a strong aurora is completely invisible behind cloud cover. This is the number that quietly decides your whole night.

💡 Pro tip: Check cloud % before you check Kp. Above 70%? Consider driving somewhere with clearer skies instead of waiting it out.

3️⃣ “Dark” and “night” aren’t the same thing.

🌆 Even after sunset, the sky can stay too bright for the aurora if the sun is still above roughly -12°. That soft blue-grey glow you see at dinnertime is civil or nautical twilight, not true night.

💡 Pro tip: In Tromsø’s winter, true darkness usually kicks in a couple of hours after sunset - check before heading out early.

4️⃣ One number does the math for you.

🔢 Aurora Probability blends the Kp forecast with real-time cloud cover into a single percentage - the fastest way to decide if it’s worth the cold.

💡 Pro tip: Treat anything above 40% as “worth getting dressed for,” and remember it updates hourly as clouds move.

5️⃣ Forecasts predict. Magnetometers confirm.

🧲 A ground station reading (ΔH) shows what’s actually happening in the atmosphere right now, not what’s predicted for tonight. A jump here means activity has already started.

💡 Pro tip: If Kp looks quiet but the magnetometer spikes, go look up anyway - forecasts often lag reality by a few hours.

6️⃣ Don’t stand outside all night - pick your window.

⏰ Cloud cover shifts hour by hour, so your odds at 9pm aren’t your odds at 2am. taken in Tromsø, Norway by @tromso.app
