Leadwing Coachman

Hook: No. 10 Ahrex Legacy LE880
Thread: 12/0 Mocha Brown
Tag: Sm. Gold tinsel
Body: Peacock herl
Rib: Sm. Gold wire
Hackle: Brown hen
Wing: Mallard slips

The Leadwing Coachman is a classic wet fly created around 1830 by Tom Bosworth, a carriage driver who drove coaches for three British monarchs. He tied the original Coachman wet fly in England using a peacock herl body, white duck wing slips, and a brown hackle. Bosworth designed the original white-winged pattern to be fished at night, as the bright wings stood out in low-light conditions, and later developed the Leadwing Coachman by swapping the white wings for dark gray mallard quill slips, creating an effective daytime pattern.
By the late 19th century, the pattern crossed the Atlantic and became a dominant staple in North American trout streams. In her famous 1892 book Favorite Flies and Their Histories, Mary Orvis Marbury noted that the Coachman family of flies was an overwhelming favorite among American anglers.

Mirage

Hook: No.12 Daiichi 1480
Thread: 12/0 Watery olive
Body: Sm. Opal mirage tinsel
Thorax: Peacock herl
Legs: Partridge

A modern approach on a modern hook. Keeping with the traditional minimalist design of the old north country flies but adding the mirage opal tinsel over the watery olive thread gives the sheen and reflection needed to grab a fishes eye without being too intense. The shimmer of the tinsel gives a great impression of a small minnow, and works well when the water is slightly stained and you need a fly with more visibility.
I’d like to think if they had material like this back then, they would’ve used it to their advantage.

Partridge & Orange

Hook: No.14 Ahrex Legacy LE810
Thread: Orange silk
Body: Orange silk
Thorax: Peacock herl
Legs: Partidge

The Partridge and Orange is a legendary historic wet fly originating in Northern England. The origins of the Partridge and Orange go back to the earliest days of English angling . Many angling historians trace its roots to a pattern called the “Donne Fly.” The pattern was first listed as a monthly fly for late summer in English angling literature more than 500 years ago. This fly was first documented in 1496 by Dame Juliana Berners in her famous book The Treatyse of Fysshynge with an Angle.
The Partridge and Orange is highly effective because it mimics a wide variety of aquatic insects without exactly looking like just one. The pulsating movement of the soft partridge feathers and the buggy, natural-colored orange body trigger a feeding instinct in trout and grayling.
The fiery orange silk represents the golden-orange hue of many caddis pupae. When wet, this orange often darkens into a natural, rusty-brown. Since a large portion of a trout’s diet consists of small, brown swimming bugs, the fly acts as a perfect general imitation.

Gold Invicta

Hook: No. 10 Ahrex LE880
Thread: Brown silk
Tail: Golden pheasant crest
Body: Gold tinsel
Rib: Fine gold wire
Hackle: Furnace cock, palmered
Throat: Blue Jay
Wing: Hen pheasant

The Invicta is a historic and highly versatile wet fly, primarily known for trout and panfish. Originally created in 1879 by English angler James Ogden. The “Gold Invicta” is actually a radiant, early-season variant of the original pattern, designed to add extra flash and attraction in low light or stained waters.
The original Invicta pattern was invented by James Ogden of Cheltenham and formally published in his 1879 book, Ogden on Fly Tying.
Interestingly, while it is now considered one of the most reliable wet flies for catching trout, Ogden originally conceived it as a dry fly. It is highly effective for imitating hatching caddisflies, small fry, and various submerged insects.

Waterhen Bloa

Hook: No.14 Ahrex Legacy LE810
Thread: Primrose silk
Body: Primrose silk dubbed with mole fur
Legs: Waterhen, under covert

The Waterhen Bloa is a classic “North Country spider” wet fly used by anglers to imitate emerging or drowned olive mayflies, such as the Large Dark Olive. Originating in Yorkshire, England, it has been a staple in river fishermen’s fly boxes for over 200 years. The first documented recording of the pattern comes from John Swarbrick, who listed it as the “Blo Flie” (No. 4) in his 1807 collection. The fly was later popularized in 1885 when prominent angler T.E. Pritt published the specific dressing in his book “North Country Flies.”
It is typically fished as part of a traditional upstream “spider” cast, on the swing, or dead-drifted just under the surface film.

One of my favorite spider patterns, and highly effective when there is an active hatch, fish are not taking nymphs, or the occasional rise. On more than one occasion including yesterday morning, it was the ticket to a client getting on fish when nothing else moved them.

Black Magic

Hook: No.12 Daiichi 1480
Thread: Black silk
Body: Black silk
Thorax: Peacock herl
Hackle: Starling

The Black Magic is a modern North Country Spider wet fly. Unlike ancient 18th-century patterns like the Snipe and Purple, the Black Magic was invented in 1967 by English angler Frederick E. Mold.
Mold developed the Black Magic to fish the Bradford Waltonians’ beats of the River Wharfe (near Bolton Abbey) in Yorkshire, England, where he needed an effective pattern to imitate the large swarms of black gnats and midges trapped in the slow, summer back-eddies.

Blae & Hare Lug

Hook: No.12 Daiichi 1310
Thread: Olive silk
Tag: Fine gold tinsel
Body: Dark hares ear
Wing: Coot secondary coverts

The “Blae and Hare Lug” is a traditional Scottish “Clyde-style” wet fly dating back to the 19th century. The name combines old Scots-English terms: “Blae” (meaning a blue-grey or dusky color) and “Hare Lug” (meaning hare’s ear.)
Dating back to the early days of Scottish and Northern English angling, tyers discovered that dubbing the spiky, buggy fur from the ear of a European brown hare creates a highly realistic, breathing body in the water.
Clyde-style flies like the Blae and Hare Lug are generally fished upstream and allowed to drift and swing naturally with the current. The spiky guard hairs of the hare’s ear trap air bubbles, while the soft hackle moves continuously in the current, creating the illusion of a struggling insect. It is historically considered an excellent “killing” pattern throughout the early and mid-season.

Hen Blackie

Hook: No.12 Daiichi 1480
Thread: Primrose silk
Body: Primrose silk
Wing: Starling, rolled
Hackle: Black hen

The Hen Blackie is a classic, sparse wet fly that emerged in northern England during the 1800s and became deeply intertwined with the traditional “Clyde Style” of fly fishing in Scotland. It is highly regarded as a springtime pattern. It is commonly fished as the tail fly on a traditional three-fly cast, or “Scottish team” stripping perfectly into the surface film to imitate a hatching sedge or drowned olive.

Blae & Ginger

Hook: No.12 Daiichi 1310
Thread: Primrose silk
Tag: Silver/Gold Tinsel
Body: Primrose silk
Wing: Snipe secondary coverts, rolled
Hackle: Ginger hen

The Blae and Ginger is a classic “Clyde-style” wet fly with a rich history originating in the Scottish Lowlands. Specifically tied to imitate small, hatching up-winged flies and midges on the River Clyde, its delicate wings, sparse profile, and slender yellow-and-ginger body make it a staple for trout and grayling.
Clyde-style flies date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries, deeply intertwined with the angling traditions of the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands. These flies are traditionally fished upstream as “spiders” or wet flies, allowing them to drift naturally to mimic the exact proportions and behavior of drifting aquatic insects.
Another really neat technique in Clyde style flies is the rolled wing. Instead of using a right and left slip, a thick portion of one feather is stripped off with tips aligned and folded over in thirds to create a flat bundled upright slip. A trademark of these Scottish classics.
