She kept watching the same scene in Rome: adults excited, children trailing reluctantly behind. So she turned the whole dynamic around.

Aleen Toroyan built TrovaTrails to make children the ones holding the clues, leading their families through history on detective missions across real historic sites. Highly Commended at the 2026 BETT Awards, the platform is now developing its first trail outside Italy, set in Roman Londinium.

ā€œWhen children lead, everything changes,ā€ she told Italy Now. ā€œThe child has the clues, knows where the family needs to go next and becomes the person everyone else follows. That sense of agency is incredibly powerful.ā€

The trails are built around a very British irreverence. Roman toilets, gruesome deaths, wonderfully weird emperors. ā€œOnce a child is laughing about Roman toilets, you can sneak in an enormous amount of history.ā€ One Italian commenter told her museums are for quiet contemplation, not laughing and running around. She is unbothered. ā€œChildren will have plenty of time for that when they’re older. First we need to make them curious enough to want to come back.ā€

On the screen problem: ā€œWe use technology to launch children back into the real world. The phone gives them a clue, then they have to look up and around them to solve it. The screen is the tool. The real world is where the adventure happens.ā€

TrovaTrails has regional innovation funding and is now looking for growth experience and investment to take the model into more cities.

Spaghetti, paper, Play-Doh — and a room full of curious young engineers.

Our latest TrovaTrails workshop was all about thinking like a Roman engineer: experimenting, testing, problem-solving and discovering that when something doesn't work, that's often where the learning starts.

STEM isn't only about learning the ā€œrightā€ answer. It's about asking why? and what if? Trying something. Testing it. Watching it fail. Changing it. Trying again.

A huge thank you to our young engineers for embracing the challenge — and to @Ottimomassimo_libreria (the cutest bookstore) for helping us create another way for kids to get hands-on with the history around them.

Keep exploring. Keep experimenting. Stay curious.

What happens when history becomes something kids can build, test, break and rethink?

Our new Think Like a Roman Engineer workshop combines history, STEM, creativity and open-ended play — giving children real engineering problems to solve rather than answers to follow.

They’ll experiment with building bridges before exploring one of the Romans’ great engineering breakthroughs: the arch — discovering for themselves how it works and why it allowed the Romans to build structures that have survived for nearly 2,000 years.

The idea is simple: when children discover how something works for themselves, they start looking at the ancient city around them differently.

Rome has just opened a new riverside park—and it’s making it much easier to balance sightseeing with a chance to cool off.

Just 10 minutes from the historic centre, this new green space has a relaxed, beachy feel, with sand, beach volleyball, a shallow splash pool for children, sun loungers and a great café serving spritz, gelato and light lunches. It’s the perfect place to escape the heat for an hour or two before heading back to explore the city.

There is also a splash pad, although when we visited it wasn’t operating and its opening times seem a little unpredictable. If it starts running consistently throughout the day, I think this could become a real favourite for families visiting Rome.

Have you been yet?

What happens when children stop being tourists and start being explorers?

They stop asking:
"How much longer?"

And start asking:
"What's next?"

This is our Colosseum mission – a self-guided family adventure that turns sightseeing into a game.

Because the best souvenir from Rome isn't something you buy.

It's watching your child light up with joy.

The Circus Maximus can be hard for kids to imagine today. A huge grassy space… and not much else.

But once they can picture the races, everything changes.

We’ve put together our favourite ways to bring the Circus Maximus alive for kids — including a FREE TrovaTrails Scorpus Charioteer Card to get them into the story before you visit.

šŸ“Missioni disponibili a Roma:
• Pantheon - La corona rubata
• Colosseo - Un tesoro sepolto
• Castel Sant’Angelo - Il castello maledetto
• Musei Capitolini - Decifra i codici

Miracoli archeologici.
