I applied the rainbow film to the front window and it worked in discouraging Cardi B. After six weeks I took it all down, and within 10 days she was back doing her all day tappa tappa and annoying everyone again. What does she want? Why has she been at my house for the last five months? There are many many other places for birds to hang out. 🫠

After a near-four-month hiatus, Sketchworks NewsBrake returns just in time for America's 250th birthday, Canada Day, the World Cup, Mercury in retrograde... and whatever else showed up on the teleprompter.

Happy Pub Day to @laurenacampora for The Animal Room! This is the best book I have read in quite a while, and I'm so honored and thrilled to have been selected to perform the audiobook version with Alex Allwine. It's a collection of short stories that weaves the characters into a larger tapestry with animals as the connecting thread. And it lays some characters absolutely bare -- I'm glad Alex performed a couple of particular stories because there's no way I would have gotten through them (I'm looking at you, "Tank"). This is a brilliant book that I highly recommend, even if you just read it instead of listening to it.

My first audiobook release this week is also the first of a series! Awakening is book one of the Last Lord of the Fey series, a progression fantasy where Tristan Anorox goes from half-breed nobody to ruler of the Fey Realm. Book 2 is also in the can and I'll be recording book 3 soon. One reason I love performing audiobooks is I get to play characters I never could on screen, like Felicity Glimmerwing in this series, a sassy teen female fairy dragon 🐉

Here’s a bonus #foodporn post because I was Appetizer Guy for a party over the weekend and all three were extremely well received! 🥳

Pineapple salsa with three kinds of hot chiles and a char on the pineapple 🍍 🌶️
Avocado chile lime crema worked standalone as a dip and with the smoked pork main course 🥑🌶️🍋‍🟩
I was so sure that the fancy pigs in blankets were going to fall apart in the oven that I didn’t even put an egg wash on top or finish the presentation. Instead they stayed together and were a delicious combination of chorizo, manchego, and membrillo.

It’s nice when the effort pays off and makes people happy ☺️

I didn’t have tearing down the deer netting cage around my Japanese maple, ripping out the overgrown grass, then building a new netting cage on my Friday afternoon schedule, but that was before I saw the deer made a hole in the old netting and chewed off all the leaves. Again. This tree doesn’t stand a chance. Fortunately I had Cardi B serenading me with her window drum solos.
This may also be why I saw the coyote in my backyard this morning 😬

At the start of February, a female cardinal (I named her Cardi B) starting flapping and tapping against my front picture window, because I presumed she was nesting and she was attacking her reflection to defend her nest. The tapping was so loud it would ruin takes in my audiobook booth and you could hear it throughout the house. Every time I shooed her away she would fly to the roof above my garage or to a close-by tree, but after a while she’d be back, tapping on the window.

I didn’t want her to hurt herself, so I covered the windows with newspapers. This worked, but blocked all the afternoon sunlight. After a couple of weeks I removed the newspaper because I thought she was finished. The flapping and tapping resumed, and she was now sometimes joined by Mr. Cardinal.

I read that putting soap on the windows also helped, so I did that, but she would tap around it. Plus it would wash off when it rained. She would sit low in the shrubs, so I covered them with fabric to block her view, but she would then sit on top of the shrubs and peck away.

I tried putting up some deer netting like I have around my Japanese maple. No dice. I bought some window markers and scribbled all over the windows. She didn’t care. I had a plastic owl in the garage from an old Sketchworks show so I propped it up in the shrubs hoping to scare her. She would sit on the owl’s head and peck away.

It’s now been over three months and Cardi B is still living her best life in front of my house, pecking away at the windows, teasing the cats, ruining audiobook takes, and waking me up as soon as the sun comes up. I never saw a nest or babies so I feel like she scammed me.

I like all animals, but at this point I’d like her to just move on. Is this a common thing to go on this long? Why can’t the neighborhood cats that I feed take care of this? Does anyone have any other ideas I can try?

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon to return to the Georgia Tech campus with former classmates and watch the third-ranked Yellow Jackets rack up another win. I used to do play-by-play for the Joltin’ Jackets back in the day and very little around the stadium looks the same from back then. Including us.
