Forgotten Phoenix Project. Documenting the city of Phoenix's Past and Present History in photos 🌵☀️📷

POSTS STORIES REELS

It’s been a while since my last post, and I genuinely appreciate those who continue to follow me. The reason for my absence is that I haven’t been feeling inspired, and it’s been challenging to stay motivated when I witness history being lost. When I learned about the Emerson House being at risk of demolition, I was pissed! I sincerely hope it can be saved and preserved so that future generations of Phoenicians can appreciate and enjoy it. Phoenix History matters, Arizona History matters, and this house matters not only because it’s historic but also because it’s someone’s home!

::Louis Emerson House::

Built in 1902 by a local butcher named Louis Emerson, this Queen Anne/Eastlake-style cottage is one of downtown Phoenix's oldest surviving homes. It previously survived relocation to make way for the Arizona Center and is on the Phoenix Historic Property Register. Currently, the 124-year-old home is the subject of an eminent domain lawsuit filed by Arizona State University (ASU), which plans to seize the lot to construct its new ASU Health headquarters. :The Stewart Motor Company::

Since 1947 The Stewart Motor Company building, designed by W. Z. Smith has been an important landmark in commercial architecture in Phoenix.

The building is an important patch in Downtown Phoenix’s crazy-quilted urban fabric. It was built with a popular material for the mid-forties - red brick which was painted pale yellow to reinforce the International/Modern look. The building integrated a streamlined architectural style with the new regional tendency toward low-lying, horizontal structures. Its turntable display window was one of the first innovations of its kind in the Southwest.

Studebakers once were spotlighted in the showroom and its layout exemplified the postwar exuberance for automobile culture through a joyful dialogue with the streetscape, which was pleasant to enjoy both on foot or by car. The dealership closed in 1972, and the building became the home of Circles Discs & Tapes.

In 2010 Circles Discs and Tapes closed its doors, as a result of the triple-threat of the rise of electronic media distribution, the decline of Arizona’s economy, and possibly the disruption of commerce that the Light Rail construction on Central Avenue caused.

In 2019 The Stewart opened in the former Studebakers dealership and later record store it being transformed into a mixed-use, 19-story high-rise apartment building
with 300+ apartment units, seven levels of parking, and both restaurant and retail space.

::The Hurley Building::

The Hurley Building is located on 7th Avenue and McDowell Road. The western edge, erected in 1929, is the panel brick section directly facing the intersection. Architect Jake Knapp and builder B.T. Wilkinson took on the project in the late ’20s, representing Phoenix’s first zoning ordinance of neighborhood commercial districts at a major intersection in an otherwise residential area.

For residents of what is now the Willo neighborhood — at the time quite suburban — this strip represented the first commercial build that offered easy walkability and convenience.

The building symbolizes Phoenix’s fascination with brick structures and Art Deco style in the late ’20s, as evidenced by the wall sheathing over cast stone panels. The concrete foundation remains in solid condition, though chunks of the façade have been altered time and time again as businesses have come and gone.

The building, expanded over a period of more than two decades, encompasses the entire northeast corner of the intersection.

The newer section of the Hurley Building has three storefront bays that have been significantly altered over the decades — originally, the storefronts on McDowell featured wood entries with glass.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

“Phoenix Motor Company”
The block-long auto complex housed a car dealership, parts store and service station when it opened at 401 W. Van Buren St. with live entertainment broadcast on KTAR in 1939. In 2017, it was converted into a 1,800-seat music venue and bar called The Van Buren along with Ziggy’s Pizza Shop & Stardust Pinbar opening next door in 2019.

“Block 77”
A view from above Central Ave between Washington & Jefferson was known as Block 77 according to the 1881 Map of The Town of Phoenix Maricopa County.

Black & white street scene blended together from the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s. The Psycho poster to the left I included as an homage to the corner’s history in the film.
The corner was acquired by George H. N. Luhrs in 1878 where he built The Commercial Hotel on the north east corner of Central Avenue and Jefferson Street. The building expanded four times before being renamed The Luhrs hotel in 1924. The hotel was demolished in 1981 and the corner remained vacant for over 30 years until The Hotel Palomar was built.
On the south east corner was The Hotel Jefferson built in 1915 and still stands today. The building is slated to become condos in the near future.
We’d like to thank our friends from Bitter & Twisted who helped get us access to the roof top of the Luhrs Central Building to capture this image.

“My Love Life -Morrissey”
27 years ago on September 17th 1991 Morrissey the former lead singer of The Smith's released the single "My Love Life.” The music video for the single was filmed in Downtown Phoenix, directed by Tim Broad and shot mostly on Van Buren Street. In the video you'll see a lot of buildings that are now gone such as the historic Kon Tiki Hotel. This wasn't easy to produce using a screen grab from the video but being a fan of The Smiths I really enjoyed the challenge.

“N Central Ave and Adams St”
Street scene the 1950’s blended in with present time. On the left The Heard building built in 1919 and the Arizona Savings tower that once sat on top of the Heard. This tower is visible in the opening sequence of of the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho. The Heard still stands today. Visible to the right is the Professional Building built in 1932 where Valley National Bank was located and famous for its rotating sign. Currently the Professional Building is open as the Hilton Garden Inn. Gone is Hi-Jolly, Indian Trading Post and Hartfields. Adams Hotel was torn down in the early 1970’s where the Renaissance Hotel now stands. As you know Phoenix is constantly changing as it has since I first created this juxtaposition and I plan on re-shooting this one and other early ones sometime soon.

“WESTWARD HO TRAFFIC”
1950’s traffic and a photo from 2012. This is one of a handful of early juxtaposition photos I did and unfortunately don’t have any info on the past photo or remember where I found it but from the look of the cars it would be from the 50’s. I do remember that I happen to be walking across the street one day and recalled I had the B&W photo sitting on my desktop. Other photos I’ve done I’ve snapped hundreds of shots trying to get the exact angle of original but this one I only took 4-5 total. Best part I took it with a iPhone 4S reason it’s grainy and not the best and somehow got lucky! I plan on re-shooting this one and other early ones sometime soon.

“FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF ARIZONA”
Built in 1912 on Central Ave and the SE corner of Washington street. It replaced Phoenix’s first bank that stood from 1887 to 1910. The building was the bank’s headquarters until it moved in 1955 but the building remained as a branch until it was demolished in 1963. A more modern branch was built on the site and also later demolished as well. In 2010 a high rise mixed use development named CityScape opened where the bank once stood. It consists of residential, retail, office and a hotel. I’d like to thank @kroschi and our friends at @downtownphoenix who commissioned us to create this photo for them which can be seen in their lobby on the 2nd floor of CityScape along with works by many other talented local Phoenix Artists. -

“HOTEL ADAMS”
1918 open air lunch fund raiser outside the Adams Hotel on Central Ave and Adams. Built in 1911 it was destroyed in 1973. The Renaissance Hotel presently stands where the Adams once stood. -

“U.S. POST OFFICE” picture circa 1905 and we are still looking for more info. We do know that the Professional Building was constructed in 1932 after Post Office was torn down and that it was moved just north to 555 N. Central Ave in 1931.

“THE HEARD BUILDING”

The Heard Building was constructed between 1919 and 1920 and was the first high-rise building to be erected in Phoenix.
Financed by Dwight B. Heard and the Commonwealth Investment Company as a new home for his investment and publishing ventures. The 7-story high-rise building has housed the offices of The Arizona Republic (formerly the Arizona Republican) and the Phoenix Gazette and local radio station KTAR.

The Heard Building can be seen in the opening sequence of the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film Psycho. #heardbuilding #truphx #psycho #alfredhitchcock #hitchcock #downtownphoenix #downtownphx #phoenix #phoenixarizona #phoenixaz #visitphoenix #myphx #localaz #azlocal #historicphoenix #phoenixhistory #phoenixlife #phxaz #phxart #phoenixart #phoenixartist #phoenixphotography #valleyofthesun by @tru_phx
