REMEMBER WHY WE STARTED. ✍🏾

Three years ago, Sharpen My Pen started with a simple idea: create a space where artists could get on stage, share their work, and get better.

From constructive feedback on stage, to making sure artists are compensated. From creating experiences the audience can enjoy, to making sure every person involved in the process feels valued.

The host.
The person at the door.
The stage hand.
The setup and breakdown crew.
The designers.
The artists.
The venue owners who open their doors.
The drink vendors who serve with a smile.
The vendors who bring their own art and products.

Everybody is a piece of the process.

And that’s what the building blocks have always been about.

Never take your ideas for granted

This platform started with an idea to record poets while they were on stage.

The event started with an idea to give poets feedback on stage they can take with them to refine their craft.

What has happened between then and now is unimaginable, especially for those who have not been able to witness.

But that’s the beautiful thing, you may not always know what your doing until you look back and see what you’ve done. We’ve not only had a front row seat in our development but been apart of watching others grow as well.

Continuing the journey can get hard many times along the way, a message from us to those going through that phase right now.

We ask you to remember why you started.

Aye fellas, they lied to us. We been out chasing bags and security, whole time they just want to see our face.

I’ve been looking at life different and what I’m chasing has become a lot more obtainable. Walking my daughter into school, seeing my nieces in the process. Swinging by my brother in law job to politic before dropping my Fiance off for her appointment.

I made it out the house, ran into @jeromeinthehouse313, woke up late but still managed to catch another word at the lords house.

The @melanierutherford1 experience was phenomenal and I’m so happy I was able to be apart.

How do you tell your story when you can barely find the words. Why is death so normal but so weird in the same breath. Maybe because we don’t experience life enough together. All parts of it is to be experienced. The good the bad the hurt the joy, the pain the tears, and the blessings. It’s all to be experienced and shared.

Condolences to all the ones have are watching loved ones transition, and happy birthday to those who is using these moments to start a new life.

Grieving While Growing, Part 2

I’m used to death.

That’s not me trying to be deep. It’s just the reality I’ve lived. At some point, death became so familiar that it almost stopped feeling real. Like I’ve been wearing a VR headset for so long that I forgot I was wearing it.

Sometimes I have to stop and remind myself…

I’m still in the game.

I take the headset off.

I’m still in the game.

I breathe.

I’m still in the game.

I look around.

I’m still here.

So I keep breathing.

I keep living.

I keep loving.

I keep creating.

Because the truth is, we’re all living to die. None of us gets out of this alive.

So while you’re here… live.

Tell people you love them.

Make the art.

Take the trip.

Laugh until your stomach hurts.

Cry when you need to.

Heal.

Forgive.

Be present.

Have a fucking ball.

Because every breath is another reminder…

You’re still in the game.

Life has been coming at me fast.

I’m grieving. I’m preparing for marriage. I’m having a baby. I’m trying to build programs, support people, find my place, and figure out what all of this means while I’m still living through it.

And honestly, I’m tired of just doing things without having the space to actually feel them.

Life is not only about completing the next task, reaching the next goal, or surviving the next situation. We are human beings. We need room to feel, express ourselves, create, heal, laugh, cry, and make sense of what is happening inside of us.

That is why art matters. That is why community matters. That is why giving people space matters.

So do your art. Write the poem. Sing the song. Paint the picture. Dance. Build something. Be kind to the world. Give people grace. And when you can, take some space for yourself.

Because life can move so quickly that, if you have not learned how to create a safe space within yourself, you can lose your voice in the middle of everything happening around you.

Right now, I’m still trying to find mine.

So if you can express yourself today, do it. You have access to something that I’m still searching for inside of myself.

Do your art. Feel your life. Give people room to be human. by @truelycertified
