Cara · Self-Discovery Guide
Helping people take off the masks they’ve been wearing — kids before the mask sets, adults after
Vienna, VA & virtual

POSTS STORIES REELS

Hi, I’m Cara! If you’re new here, welcome.

I’m a Self-Discovery Coach in Vienna and Oakton, and my work is to help people know, love, and trust themselves.

For kids, much of my work is about developing a lasting confidence that comes from knowing who you are and trusting your own voice, not one that depends on conditions like grades, praise, or fitting in.

For teens, it’s about sorting out who they really are from who everyone expects them to be. With so much pressure to fit in and perform, they get a space to think out loud, notice what they actually feel, and make choices that are their own.

For young adults, it’s finding steadiness through big changes like college and new independence.

For adults, it’s making room to slow down, notice the patterns that run your life, and live from the inside out.

And for parents, I offer support alongside your child’s sessions, because you’re a big part of the work.

My sessions are mostly conversation, often outside, with mindfulness practices shaped to you. The Enneagram is one tool I love for understanding how each person’s mind works.
Sessions are in person at The Grounds of Livev in Oakton, my home studio in Vienna, or virtual. Send me a message or book through the link in my bio. I’d love to hear from you. by @truenaturealignment

Enneagram 6 - the Loyal Skeptic
Every parent has a little Six in them. Our job is to protect our children, and to do so we have to be aware of all the things that can threaten their safety.
The gift:
Sixes are analytical, aware, and loyal. Because they feel fear more than most, they’ve had to build more courage, too.
What they’re trying to earn:
Security. Sixes have a particular sensitivity to danger and threat. They’re always aware of where something could go wrong, and they fear that it will. Being prepared and staying loyal feels like the way to stay safe.
The challenge:
To not let threat dominate their ability to make decisions or act. Some Sixes respond to fear with flight and pull back (phobic). Others respond with fight and charge straight at it (counterphobic). In both cases fear is still the one deciding.
In parenting:
We can all feel this one. Parenting means seeing the risks around every corner, and the Six has this ability in spades. The work for those who lead with Six, especially, lives in the tension between protection and faith. How can we protect our kids while also giving them freedom to learn and build confidence in themselves?
If you’re raising a 6:
Encourage the courage.
Help them acknowledge the fear, and learn to be informed by it, without being ruled by it.
When they bring up a concern, ask them how they might be able to handle it if that situation were to happen.
Help them have faith in their own ability to act thoughtfully.
A practice for all of us this week:
Name something you’re afraid of because you’ve lost some faith in yourself. Then ask yourself, what is one step I can take with courage, even without certainty? by @truenaturealignment

Do you see what I see hidden in the paintbox of autumn leaves?
Last night, feeling a bit disheartened, I was taking the trash out and looked up at the moon. It stopped me in my tracks. It always does. No matter what’s on my mind, seeing the moon gives me a jolt out of the past and future and into the present moment.
Nature has a way of doing that for me. Every day I’m awed by the raw, generous beauty around me that I have absolutely nothing to do with.
This morning, as I opened the door to take my dogs out, an enormous winged creature flew right past me. Then I got the gift of finding where he landed. by @truenaturealignment

Enneagram 5 - The Investigator

Part of the surface description of a Five resonates with me. I feel like I’m always in my head; but my head is a loud, jumbled place. As a One, I ruminate to find peace: certainty that I’ve done what’s right and handled what I can control. A Five spends a lot of time in their head too, but for a completely different reason. For them, the mind is a retreat, and knowledge is a source of security in a world that feels like it’s asking for more than they have. Similar behavior, different motivation. That’s why the Enneagram focuses on why we do things, not just what we do.
What they’re trying to earn: At the core, 5s often believe love and safety come from being capable, knowledgeable, and needing very little. They fear being overwhelmed or not having enough for what life asks of them.
The challenge: Fives often feel they have a limited supply of energy, so they ration how much of themselves they extend. Solitude does restore them, but waiting until they feel capable enough to engage can keep them from the grounding that being out in the world offers.
In parenting: Five parents can bring a steady calm. They take their kids’ questions seriously and give them real room to become their own people. But constant needs can leave a Five drained, and they may be find themselves physically there without being fully present. Their instinct to think before reacting can help calm big emotions, but can also feel like distance when a child is seeking closeness.
If you’re raising a 5: They may need time alone without it being taken as rejection, and to hear that their needs are welcome.
A practice for all of us this week: When you feel drained, try a minute of embodied presence. Place a hand on your chest, feel your breath, and notice your surroundings. Then ask: what do I actually need right now? Rest or engagement? by @truenaturealignment

Enneagram 4 - the Individualist

Enneagram 4 is the type I’ve recently felt I have a lot to learn from.

The gift: Those who lead with 4 recognize beauty and depth. They are often deeply creative. They can notice feelings and hold space for them, even the hard ones. For me, and for many of the other types, it’s hard to honor a painful feeling without rushing to fix it or brush it aside. Fours have a gift for letting feelings simply exist.

What they’re trying to earn: At the core, 4s often believe love comes from being truly seen and known, yet they can tend to fear that something essential is missing in them.

The challenge: The same ability to feel deeply can make it hard to reach the other side of the feeling spectrum. Longing and the sense that something is missing can feel familiar, even comfortable, and hard to leave. Fours often focus on what feels lacking, which can lead to the belief that the grass is greener somewhere else.

In parenting: This can show up as a beautiful ability to empathize with your kids’ struggles, and also as difficulty separating your feelings from theirs, or letting a hard moment pass when it’s ready.

If you’re raising a 4: They may need you to sit with a big feeling before offering a solution, and to hear that nothing about them is missing.

A practice for all of us this week: When a hard feeling comes up, notice it and honor it with compassion, without feeling like it has to stay. by @truenaturealignment

“The lamps are different but the lights are the same”. - Rumi

One of the speakers shared this quote last night at the Friends of the American University of Afghanistan (FAUAF) event held at the Embassy of Qatar. FAUAF is an organization that has been dear to my family for years. I was so grateful to be there with many of them last night to celebrate the school’s 20th anniversary.

AUAF opened in Kabul 20 years ago and was targeted from the start because of what it stood for. In August 2016, two faculty members were kidnapped outside the gates, and weeks later gunmen stormed the campus, killing students and several staff and guards. When the Taliban took the city in August 2021, the campus closed overnight. Rather than permanently shut its doors, the university moved to Doha, Qatar, bringing students out of Afghanistan where it could and teaching the rest online. Today it offers free, accredited online degrees to students still inside Afghanistan, including women barred from school past the 6th grade. Demand is enormous— they can only admit one in every fifty applicants.

Listening to the several female alumni talk about their courage and determination with which they have pursued their dreams to live their purpose, their potential, and their truths through the attacks and the fall, I saw Rumi’s light shine bright.

Living from the inside out means trusting what’s true within you rather than what’s been imposed from the outside. These women have done that in the hardest possible conditions. Every one of us deserves the chance to know our own light and let it shine.

3 is the type I’ve probably most hoped I was 🤪. High achieving, successful. Those who lead with 3 tend to be hard-working, efficient and effective.
What separates a 3 from the rest of us who work hard is the why. It isn’t about doing it “right” or being needed. It’s that who you are and what you accomplish feel merged.
Type 3 — The Achiever. The voice says that if I keep delivering, keep succeeding, keep being the one who gets it done, I’ll be worth something.
So you learn to read a room for what counts as winning, and you become that. It’s automatic by now.
In parenting, it’s not just wanting your kids to do well. Their results feel like yours. It makes you capable in ways your family relies on. It also means when something falls apart, you don’t sit in the feeling. You reframe it and have found the angle where it’s actually good for them, and you’re telling it that way. The reframe is genuine. It’s also how the part where it just hurt gets passed over.
It doesn’t look the same on everyone. For some it’s quiet — doing everything well, never mentioning the effort. For some it’s visible — always having the update. And for some it’s one person — wanting to be the parent your child is most proud of.
Underneath it all is the same motivator. Love is earned in what you produce. So you keep producing.
That’s the 3 pattern. Even harder than the working is that the version of you who delivers has been so useful for so long that the rest of you rarely had a say.
The Enneagram gives us a map of our patterns and what they’re trying to protect. But knowing the pattern isn’t enough. That’s why mindfulness is central to how I coach. These practices create enough space for non-judgmental awareness, so we can appreciate our strategies for how they’ve protected us and take them out of the driver’s seat.
For a 3, that practice is harder than it sounds: staying with something long enough to feel it — the win as much as the loss.
Awareness shows us the story is playing again. Presence gives us space to not be ruled by it.
You don’t have to be impressive to be loved.
Do you lead with 3? Or are you parenting one? How does it show up for you? by @truenaturealignment

For quite a while, I thought I led with 2. I was better at identifying other people’s needs than my own, and I identified with being a “helper.”
What changed my assessment was understanding the why. Helping reassured me that I was doing what was “right” and a “good” person. Those are more One motivations. In the Two pattern, helping can become a way of securing love and closeness, versus earning “goodness”.
Type 2 — The Helper.
The inner voice says: If I can stay attuned enough, warm enough, necessary enough, I’ll be loved.
Twos bring exceptional warmth and generosity to parenting. They often notice what someone needs before it’s been said. As a parent, this can mean knowing just how to comfort your child, remembering the little things that others wouldn’t, and anticipating their needs. It’s a real gift, and can also be exhausting, when being available and attuned feels necessary to keeping your place in their heart.
It might show up in creating a cozy, welcoming home, volunteering for all the school needs, knowing which family could use extra support. It might come out strongest in wanting to be your child’s person—the one they tell things to—and the sting the most when they confide in someone else.
These behaviors alone don’t make someone a Two. The question is what happens underneath: Does being needed reassure me that I’m loved? When I’m less needed, do I feel less important?
When attention goes toward others so consistently, your own needs can become harder to recognize—or admit. Offering care may feel easier than receiving it.
The Enneagram gives us a map of our patterns and what they’re trying to protect. That’s why mindfulness is central to how I coach. It helps us notice our strategies with compassion, appreciate how they’ve served us, and create space to choose.
For a Two, that practice might begin with noticing a need of your own, expressing it directly, and allowing yourself to receive without first having to give.
Awareness shows us the story is playing again. Presence gives us space to respond differently.
You don’t have to be needed to be loved.
Do you lead with 2, or recognize this pattern in your parenting? How does it show up for you? by @truenaturealignment

I lead with Enneagram Type 1 — The Inner Critic. The voice in my head is always evaluating, scanning for what’s wrong, how I should be doing things. It says that if I can just be good enough, responsible enough, correct enough, I can be okay.
Goodness for this type is broader than being kind. Underneath it is a constant sense of how things should be. Sometimes that’s about order: how things should look and run. Sometimes it’s about responsibility: what I should have prevented or done better. Either way, when there’s a gap between how things are and how they should be, it registers as wrong. And if it’s wrong, it’s mine to fix.
In parenting, I notice it most when my kids do something wrong. Some part of me instantly reads it as evidence that I’m a bad parent. Their mistakes don’t stay theirs. They become an indictment of me.
It shows up in smaller ways, too. When my kids are running around, loud and silly and wild, my body tightens and I get very officious. But most of the time nothing is actually wrong. They’re just being kids. And the truth is, I WANT my kids to be silly and loud and themselves.
Underneath both is the same thing: goodness as something I earn, moment by moment, and am always at risk of losing.
That’s the 1 pattern: the constant audit (and for my flavor, the self-audit). It gets in the way of what I actually want, which is to be present with my kids and let them just be.
The Enneagram gave me a map of my patterns and what they’re trying to protect. But knowing the pattern isn’t enough. That’s why mindfulness is central to how I coach. These practices create enough space for non-judgmental awareness, so we can appreciate our strategies for how they’ve protected us but also take them out of the driver’s seat.
Now, when I feel that tightening, I try to notice it before I act on it. Sometimes my kids do need to settle down. But a lot of the time, the one who needs to loosen up is me.
Awareness shows me the story is playing again. Presence gives me space to not be ruled by it (at least not all of the time).
I don’t have to earn being good. Neither do you.
Do you lead with Enneagram 1? Or are you parenting one? I’d love to hear how it shows up for you. by @truenaturealignment

All of us have strategies we believe, on some level, we need in order to be okay.

Some of us believe we have to earn goodness. Some believe we have to earn love. Others chase success, or security, or peace.

These strategies have protected us, but they also get in the way of our truest self-expression, the part of us that lives beneath the patterns.

We use them everywhere in our lives, and parenting has a way of bringing them to the surface.

The Enneagram is a map of these patterns: nine different strategies for being okay. When we can see our pattern clearly, and learn to be present in the moment it takes hold, its grip starts to loosen.

Awareness shows us the story. Presence gives us space to not live it.

Starting next week, I’ll share one type at a time through the lens of parenting, beginning with my own.🧡 by @truenaturealignment

This weekend I went on a retreat to mark the completion of a year-long program with the amazing Nhien Vuong at @evolvingenneagram to become a certified Enneagram practitioner.

Finally meeting in person these precious people I had been studying with all year — presenting our projects and practicums to each other, watching what everyone had built — was an incredible experience.

For anyone unfamiliar, the Enneagram is a tool to help people grow in deeper self-understanding. The types can be described as habitual patterns that pull us out of presence and distract us from living from the essence of who we are. Rather than boxing you in, understanding your patterns can be a path to greater freedom. Awareness helps the patterns loosen their grip and allow the gifts underneath to be more accessible.

I’m leaving this weekend with more desire and resolve to share what I’ve learned — with individuals, small groups, and families. We all have survival strategies that helped us once. When we let them run the show, they’re the very thing standing between us and our truest selves, and between us and the people we love.

*One of the most special parts of the weekend was meeting someone I’ve known for years and who is very dear to my heart, @rachaelfelicitygrace. Being able to hug her and have chats into the night was an incredible gift that I will never forget. She gave me the gorgeous prayer on the second to last slide. 💚 by @truenaturealignment

Just finished The Calamity Club, recommended by a dear friend who clearly knows me well. It shares a theme with so many of my favorite books: women who turn out to be far stronger than anyone around them assumed—and far stronger than their circumstances should have left them.

It’s set in Mississippi in 1933, and the strength is found in all the “wrong” places, on purpose. The upstanding citizens of the town, who had already decided they were the good ones, were doing the real damage. The women it had written off from the start—left with almost no options that weren’t going to be held against them—were the ones showing up for each other.

Each of them had been handed a story about who she was. The story turns when she stops taking anyone else’s word for it and starts acting as though her worth was never theirs to decide.

Adult historical fiction, and it goes to some heavy places. But so good. by @truenaturealignment
