Meet the Maker! A year into my quilting journey and I've yet to do one of these, so here goes:
.
I'm Laura, the designer/maker behind True Neutral Design Co. I'm a professional graphic & UI/UX designer with over a decade of experience, an ambitious novice quilter, and now I'm fusing these two passions to start offering my own quilt pattern designs (whaaaaaat?)!
.
Here you can expect to find design, inspiration, and content that is a little/lotta bit nerdy, mostly geometric and structured, a sprinkling of spoopy/witchy, and always, ALWAYS, a loving, encouraging, safe space for my fellow creatives.
.
Like many of you, my love and appreciation of quilting stems back to my childhood, growing up with multiple family members that awed me with the quilts they made. For whatever reason I thought I could never make quilts because my sewing experience was so limited. But in winter 2023 I was feeling lost and uncreative and was looking for an artistic outlet that involved making something with my own two hands but also felt meaningful. I decided to spend a day with my grandma, who to me is almost synonymous with quilting. She has been quilting for decades, for no other reason than that she loves to quilt and she loves to GIFT her creations to those near and dear to her. And with 7 children, 11 grandchildren, and now 8 great-grandchildren, that's added up to A LOT of beautiful keepsakes over the years. I sat with her as she walked me through the basics, showed me her works in progress, piled me high with books and supplies, and gave me an assignment to get me started. She is the sweetest and most encouraging human I know. She has been there with me every step this past year, and I have been like a giddy little kid eager to show her every new piece I create. Long story short (too late), she is the reason I have found my passion for quilting and my reminder to ALWAYS share your art, especially with the ones you love.

I'm SO happy you're here with me. I've made lots of online quilty friends over the past year and I look forward to continuing to see what we can create and how we can continue to elevate this ancestral and communal art ❤️

A few months ago I made a book/e-reader sleeve for my husband for an anniversary gift (slide 5-6). He loved it so much, he asked me to make two more for his coworkers. All I had to go on was, " one likes Cinderella blue and the other likes sharks." Challenge accepted.

This time last week, I was getting ready to publish State of Mine, a Maryland flag–inspired quilt pattern I'd been working on for the past year (and thinking about for even longer). I couldn't have imagined how much support and love it would receive.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out this week to express your love of the pattern, ask questions, chat about color palettes, and share your ideas for making it your own (even chatting about state flag protocol, which was awesome!). Seriously y'all...I am feeling the love.

There's a lot of pressure to think about success in terms of sales or profit, but at the end of the day, I feel RICH IN COMMUNITY.

Welcome to my new quilty friends, and thank you to the oldies but goodies. ❤️ I'm looking forward to seeing what's next on the horizon.

I'd also be remiss if I didn't give a huge shout-out to @cassie_willnauer for offering to swap tech-editing services. More proof that this community absolutely rocks, and that you really can make friends with people you've never met IRL (for now 🤞).

Braved the heat wave last night for fireworks with the fam and to celebrate my mom and sister's birthdays 🎆🎂. And my hubby was kind enough to indulge my request for an instagram-worthy sunset photo 😅

As a professional UX and graphic designer, I love curating color compositions. But I've realized it's never just about the colors themselves. I'm drawn to palettes that evoke a feeling, tell a story, or bring back a memory.

These fabric prints reminded me of places and people and seasons from my life, and I enjoyed translating them into unique color studies for my State of Mine quilt pattern. Which one would you make? 👀

Fabric appreciate post ✨🤩

True story: slecting a backing fabric is one of my favorite parts of creating a quilt. And finding a gorgeous, large-scale print like this one from @sally_mountain_designs makes me practically giddy. I ordered this fabric over two years ago, knowing that it would make a perfect backing someday. And when I started working out a color palette for my State of Mine cover quilt, I realized that with a few small adjustments I could match it beautifully to this print! Almost like it was calling to me subconsciously 🤣

Here's a sneaky peek at the 3 color variations and 4 size options included in the State of Mine quilt pattern! As a native Marylander, I can confirm that we love to put our flag on EVERYTHING, quilts included. This design gives it a minimalist spin...a subtle love letter to my home state. Two and a half years in the making, but I am SO happy to finally gift this quilt to my cousin and his husband in honor of their wedding ❤️. Will I ever make a quilt this big again? Absolutely not. Will I ever make a quilt this big again? Probably yes 😅
