Our #FileUnitFriday this week is from a recently acquired collection! This is from the Allen Schwartz Papers, who served in the Army during the Korean War. Much of this collection consists of leaflets targeted at North Korean and Chinese soldiers, urging them to surrender or desert. This leaflet talks about the lack of proper helmets and equipment for North Korean troops. Florence Blanchfield was a trailblazing advocate for the Army-Navy Nurse Act, signed by President Truman on April 16, 1947. This legislation granted @USArmy and @USNavy nurses permanent commissioned officer status.

On July 18, 1947, General Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Blanchfield as a lieutenant colonel within the Army Nurse Corps, making her the first woman to hold a permanent, regular commission in the U.S. Army.

In celebration of #America250, we’re excited to announce the launch of a new interactive website that features records from across the Presidential Libraries’ collections in partnership with the National Archives Foundation. The new website showcases letters received from the American public, foreign leaders, celebrities, and more. We’ll be adding letters regularly to the website, so be sure to keep coming back for more! Explore the Letters here: letterstothepresidents.org

Two of the letters that the Truman Library included are these letters written in support and in opposition to President Truman's idea to institute Universal Military Training. #LettersToThePresidents @America250 by @truman.library
