I always love when someone comes to me with an idea that’s deeper than just making something look cool.

When Jay first reached out about this project, he told me he wanted the visuals to connect to the Black diaspora and Pan-Africanism, but without leaning on the imagery we usually associate with it. No flags, no obvious color palettes. He wanted it to feel different.

That immediately made me start researching.

Being Caribbean myself, I started thinking about different Carnival traditions throughout the islands, and I kept coming back to Jab Jab in Grenada. The tradition dates back to the abolition of slavery, when freed Africans covered themselves in black oil, fashioned their shackles as necklaces, and wore horns to reclaim the “devil” label that had been forced onto them by colonizers. What was meant to shame them became something powerful. That idea really stuck with me.

From there, we mixed that history with the energy of Miami Ghetto Tech. I wanted it to feel raw, loud, sweaty, and alive. Something that felt rooted in history but didn’t feel like a history lesson.

That’s honestly my favorite part of making work like this. Taking someone’s vision, asking a million questions, going down rabbit holes, and finding references that aren’t the first thing everyone thinks of.

Really grateful to Jay for trusting me with this project and letting me run with the concept. And thank you to everyone who helped make it happen, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. This is a special one to me. 🖤 by @trumannali
