The Yomigaeri Tunnel

Reader, this is my first book review. Be kind to me, but rest assured that everything you’re about to read is true. To me, at least.
First, a content warning: The Yomigaeri Tunnel deals with loss, addiction, suicide, and more. It’s a healing process, but it might be either beneficial or triggering.
Now: this book is near perfect. Following eighteen-year-old Monika in her quest to reunite with her recently (or long?) lost childhood friend, the story starts slow and cozy, almost like a character in itself: hesitant to move forward, anticipating trouble. But by chapter four, it becomes a page-turner and stays that way until the end.
I won’t risk spoilers, so I’ll just say there are plenty of exciting (from a reader’s perspective) moments I wish I could talk about.
The POV is first-person: the obvious choice for a journey unfolding both in the tunnel and Monika’s mind. The pacing is strong, with only a single slightly slower page. The author tackles delicate topics with a voice that is always, and I mean always, perfectly balanced between deep seriousness and a levity/irony only someone who has lived through similar experiences could handle so masterfully.
Style-wise, if you are a proud member of the anime generation like this forty-seven-year-old man, you’ll feel right at home. You’ll find echoes of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Your Name, Sword Art Online, and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
More of a sci-fi nerd? There’s Ubik by Philip K. Dick. The middle? Luke’s Trial of the Spirit in Empire Strikes Back. The ending? Very Gilmore Girls.
And I’m just so happy this book doesn’t end like 1984 or a random Black Mirror episode!
By now, you can tell I’m a fan. So why near perfect and not completely perfect? The protagonist’s relationship with her uncle feels inconsistent—sometimes deeply emotional, sometimes distant, depending on what serves the story. Maybe I misunderstood the arc. Maybe it reflects real emotions. You’ll decide.
But seriously: read it. This is the Jonathan Livingston Seagull of my middle-aged life.

Frutti di bosco + Rocher = estasi

Per capire le dimensioni guardate la mia mano che regge la cialda e ricordatevi quanto sono enorme.
