Nine years ago, the Sixers drafted Joel Embiid third overall. Immediately into his career, disaster struck. If a foot injury that looked to sideline him for his entire rookie year wasn’t devastating enough, his brother passed away in late October 2014. Joel seemed, both mentally and physically, a lifetime away from playing basketball again — and these circumstances led us to doubt he would ever return. As unfortunate as it sounded, Joel seemed doomed to join guys like Greg Oden and Brandon Roy as the biggest ‘what-ifs’ in NBA history. Simply watching Joel step onto a basketball court would’ve been a miracle in itself — and step on the court he did. Watching Jo hit a fadeaway and block Russ in a thirty-second span in his debut was immeasurably satisfying; no matter what the future held, we would always have that moment. Imagine telling someone in 2014 that Joel not only would still be playing, but that he would become the best player in the league; that he had finally capitalized on his potential and become one of the league’s premier two-way talents; that he just got his second consecutive scoring title and is on his way to winning his first MVP. I’m sure they’d call you crazy, but this isn’t a work of fiction: it’s Joel Embiid. I think it’s worth taking these five days before the Sixers take on the Nets in round one to appreciate Joel's strides. He’s playing at arguably a higher level than any Sixer before him, and he’s done that by dramatically improving each year. It's unreal and worth any descriptor you can think of — miraculous, unprecedented, remarkable — because it’s impossible to be hyperbolic about Joel’s greatness. It’s so rewarding that his talent will finally be nationally recognized when he’s named the MVP in a few weeks; genuinely, it makes all of the pain from being a fan of this team for the last decade worth it. So before we get to our playoff intensity as a fanbase, let’s take a step back and appreciate Joel’s career arc. Obviously, we all want a championship, but Joel’s accomplishments thus far have been nonetheless outstanding — and, regardless of how this season ends, I’m going to be a mess when he makes his MVP acceptance speech. by @trusttheeagles

Last season, after a blowout road loss to the Buccaneers, I called for Nick Sirianni’s job, claiming that he’d lost the locker room, and that Kellen Moore might offer a much-needed new perspective atop the coaching staff. That was, obviously, an overreaction, as Sirianni shaved his head and authored one of the greatest 180s in recent memory, culminating in his dismantling of Andy Reid and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl (just in case anyone forgot...). I wouldn’t dare suggest that Nick’s seat should be at all hot after back-to-back frustrating losses, but I think there is currently a similar pressure on him as there was heading into the bye last season. The stakes are undoubtedly lower — had Sirianni failed to figure things out during that bye week last year, he’d be without a job — but I can’t help but feel that the fate of the 2025 Eagles rests in the balance of Sunday’s result. After all, of the 38 teams to start a season 4-0 since 2010, only one proceeded to lose their next three games: the 2012 Cardinals, who lost nine-straight and went 1-11 overall after their 4-0 start. They simply need to get back on track this weekend in Minnesota. Of course, Nick doesn’t shoulder all of the blame for their current skid — Jalen hasn’t played well, the offensive line has been uncharacteristically poor, and their defense isn’t quite as tight as it was a season ago — but think about the mantra Nick preaches any chance he gets, and the one with which he guides the team: Tough, Detailed, Together. Have the Eagles shown any of those qualities through six weeks of the season? And have the Eagles demonstrated the focus they preached preseason, when they insisted so fervently they had moved on from their Super Bowl win that they refused to watch its accompanying banner get raised? Even when the record was prettier, I don’t think any of those traits were evident. The missed deep shots and coverage breakdowns aren’t his fault, but their sloppiness and general malaise falls squarely on his shoulders. I still believe Nick’s ability to rally and lead men is second-to-none — but, if the Eagles want any chance of turning this season around, I badly need him to prove that on Sunday. by @trusttheeagles
