I’m pretty certain today was the first time I’ve heard, “Holy s%#@! It’s you!” from a cashier while in line at a grocery store.

I was already grateful to have done an interview with The New York Times and have the opportunity to share my thoughts on CultureHUB, the economy, and other topics, and I was floored when they requested a photo shoot. But I never expected to end up on the front page of the business section. Thank you again to Jordyn Holman for your time, talents and professionalism as a journalist, and thank you again to Adriana Zehbrauskas for your gifts and your eye as a photog.

The Call Me Mother Experience surfaces profound realities around the Black maternal health crisis and honors the full complexity of the Black birthing journey.

Facilitated by The ALLICE Collective, this virtual check-in offers a space for anyone who has experienced loss, struggle, joy, or wants to discuss their time in the installation to reflect on their journey and how their mental health has been impacted.

Artists from the Call Me Mother Collective will join the conversation as we consider how art can be a tool for processing and connecting with community.

Please go to our website and sign up for a Wednesday evening reflection, they will always be from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm Central.

2026 - Oct. 14, Nov. 11, Dec. 9
2027 - Jan. 13 and Feb. 10

⚕️✍🏾🩺🎨The Call Me Mother Experience (CMME) is an interactive, immersive installation and experience that combines digital storytelling, text-based art, spoken word, film, and live performance, as a platform to examine Black folks and the profound ways they and their communities navigate the birthing journey.

Fam! We are 21 days away from the opening of the Call Me Mother Experience at @thehealthmuseum! Can you believe it?

If you’re new here here’s what you should know my dears⬇️

📣🩺⚕️Debuting October 4, 2026, The Health Museum unveils the Call Me Mother Experience, an immersive, multi-site exhibition and call to action aimed at raising awareness about Black maternal health in the United States.

📈📊The curator, Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton chose to debut the work in Houston, Harris County, where March of Dimes statistics rate it the worst place in the U.S. for Black women to give birth.

📑👩🏽‍⚕️🤰🏾Research from the Commonwealth Fund which promotes an equitable healthcare system, shows Black mothers are more than twice as likely to die than any other ethnicity, Mouton, a multitalented artist and Houston’s first Black poet laureate, was inspired to create the exhibit after writing a poem while miscarrying in her home at the end of her first trimester.

🎭🎨🖼️📝💃🏽This exhibit features film, photography, visual art, poetry, sculptures, and so much more! Please come with an open heart and mind. 🫂💗
