Monet's Water Lily Garden 💐⛲️

October 2021

If you zoom in, you can see the famous Japanese bridge Monet always painted 🖼

After 10 years of living in Giverny, he bought some land from his neighbours and dug a small pond. Apparently neighbours objected as they were worried his 'strange plants' would poison the water. Undeterred Monet continued expanding his ponds until we have the large pond that can be visited today.

Monet was inspired for this garden by Japanese gardens and a collection of Japanes prints that can be seen in his house.

The ponds are filled with his famous water lilies and of course you can see and walk on the bridge which features in his famous water lily paintings. The edges of the ponds are also beautifully planted with weeping willows, cherry trees, rhododendrons and azaleas, ferns, irises and much much more.

Manhattanhenge - Half Sun ⛅️

This phenomenon only occurs 4 times a year - twice full sun, twice half sun ☀️ ⛅️

“What will future civilizations think of Manhattan Island when they dig it up and find a carefully laid out network of streets and avenues? Surely the grid would be presumed to have astronomical significance, just as we have found for the pre-historic circle of large vertical rocks known as Stonehenge, in the Salisbury Plain of England.

For Stonehenge, the special day is the summer solstice, when the Sun rises in perfect alignment with several of the stones, signaling the change of season.

For Manhattan, a place where evening matters more than morning, that special day comes twice a year, when the setting Sun aligns precisely with the Manhattan street grid, creating a radiant glow of light across Manhattan's brick and steel canyons, simultaneously illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of the borough's grid. A rare and beautiful sight.

For these two days, as the Sun sets on the grid, half the disk sits above and half below the horizon. My personal preference for photographs. But the day after also offers Manhattanhenge moments, but at sunset, you instead will find the entire ball of the Sun on the horizon.”

Kaaterskill Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in New York State, with a breathtaking two-tier drop totaling over 260 feet. Located in the Catskill Mountains, it has been a popular destination for hikers and artists since the 19th century, inspiring Hudson River School painters with its natural beauty. In winter, the falls often freeze, creating a stunning ice formation. Definitely a must visit during fall when the leaves are orange and yellow 🍁 🍂
