Déjà cinq ans à Montréal ! Aujourd'hui !

Le 1er septembre 2021, j'ai recommencé ma vie à une nouvelle ville. Après près de 42 ans à ma ville natale de Toronto, je suis parti avec le but de suivre l'appel de Dieu, qui m'avais dit que je ne serais jamais content si j'avais resté à Toronto.

Et maintenant ? Je crois que c'est une des meilleures décisions de ma vie.

Je continue à améliorer mon français. J'ai une communauté personelle que je n'avais jamais à Toronto. Et le plus important, je suis beaucoup plus content qu'avant.

En passant, je ne traduirai pas mon texte. 🤷🏾‍♂️

One year ago today, I did my first stand-up comedy set. I've since done ten more.

On that first night, I was not nervous. Right before I went on stage, I thought to myself that every choice I've ever made brought me to this moment. Therefore, I was supposed to be there.

I don't have an endgame for this, other than having a blast every time. If I never reach the heights of people like Chelsea Handler and Nate Bargatze, so be it.

On my 2025 vision board, I wrote, "Do one stand-up comedy set". The other ten are gravy.

By the way, it's nice to be on stage without putting up with my pastor getting on my case for not knowing a song from the 1800s.

Before this weekend, the last time I had this view from a church stage was August 29, 2021. That means it's been four years and seven months since I last did anything related to church ministry (apart from briefly serving coffee).

A lot of healing and unlearning had to take place between then and now. I'm still in the middle of it, and I felt comfortable enough to join my church's Easter choir last month.

Christian culture is a funny thing. We'll demand grace and forgiveness from God for ourselves every day, yet we'll also withhold it from others. We quote the Bible where Jesus says "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest," yet we sometimes expect volunteers to work themselves to the point of burnout. Saying no to a church request can feel like saying no to God; some church leaders deliberately play on that. When you're in the thick of that toxicity, it's hard to see it for the soul-sucking and faith-killing poison that it really is.

What I once saw as willingness and faithfulness was really a by-product of my people-pleasing tendencies, which I still have. I'm much more aware of them now, so I can avoid leaning into them and make sure to never do anything as a result of peer pressure - inside or outside of ministry.

I was born and raised in Toronto, but I just bought this hat one weekend ago.

In 1992 and 1993, I was too young to fully appreciate the nature of what the Toronto @bluejays were doing when they won back-to-back World Series Championships. That didn't stop me from celebrating the fact that a team from my city had reached the baseball summit.

I am still processing last night's World Series loss. It's affecting me more than I thought it would. I don't follow sports teams, and the Jays' post-season run proved that I'm not cut out for it. During the World Series, I lived and died on every pitch. I can't fathom doing that for an entire season. (Sidebar: @samfraserto, how the heck do you have the fortitude for it? Respect.)

It's easy to concentrate on what the Blue Jays didn’t do, and we can't tell the whole story without that chapter. However, what they did do was nothing short of miraculous. They brought the LA @dodgers to the brink, exceeding expectations in the process. They battled until the very end. They brought an entire country together. There are political leaders who wish they could unite people the way the Jays did.

This playoff run was something I didn't think I'd see again, and I am glad that I was alive to witness it.

Thank you, Blue Jays. You are Canada's team.
