🚨OFFICIAL DECLARATION OF VICTORY 🍦

We are pleased to interrupt our honeymoon to officially declare that we are the first people — ever, without any doubt whatsoever — to have now visited all five locations of @mdiicecream.

In 2019, we made no notice of a small ice cream shop we happened upon in Bar Harbor, Maine on the eponymous Mount Desert Island. A few years later, we moved to our lovely neighborhood of Mount Pleasant in Washington DC, and became regulars at MDI, a cornerstone of our lives and our dog’s.

In 2023, we had a spare afternoon in Portland and stumbled into another location — their second in Maine and one that made us smile. We had now been to the three US locations, by happenstance.

But was that all there is to live for?

No. When dropping into our Mount Pleasant institution, we would frequently ask: Why are two other spots randomly in Japan? The kind staff usually humored our questions, and that was that.

That was until we began planning our 🇯🇵 trip — and the idea of heading to the Japanese Alps became appealing for the mountains and foliage. Wait, the town of Matsumoto? Was that not where the fourth MDI spot was?

Yes, dear reader, it was.

When we landed in Matsumoto on Tuesday night, we made a beeline for the promised land. Owner Kelton emerged from a back room — what a guy. We asked him what you have been wondering this entire, pompous Instagram post. “Are you aware of anyone visiting all five before?”

He was not. Someone once said they might visit the 5th spot in the future, but there is no evidence and, crucially, they did not declare victory.

But we do. Because the next day, we commandeered a poor taxi driver and made him take us 30 minutes away to a BEAUTIFUL location in Azumino, nestled among the Japanese Alps. The miso butterscotch, the wasabi, the Urayama honey and the Shinshu apple flavors are not to be found in Washington DC.

So now, ice cream fanatics, this newlywed couple comes with a sweet spoil of victory. MDI bestowed us with free beanies in a ceremony that enshrined our record.

We are the first people on Planet Earth to have visited all five worldwide locations of Mount Desert Island Ice Cream.

Please clap. by @tschleifer

I am sad to report that I am no longer the fiancé of @anna.marie.phd.

I’ll have more to say about our wedding this weekend — but at this big transition moment for me, I gotta say I will miss the past 18 months too. I have loved the process of getting married.

I got proposed to, and got to counter-propose. The best of both worlds.

I cherished getting to see my Mom throw a bridal shower for Anna, to buy my Dad his first new suit in God knows how long, and to see them try and dance.

I got to fall in love with The Berkshires and Jacob’s Pillow, our venue. I got to bring an engagement ring I designed to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower and to Stockholm to see Taylor Swift.

I played football in a 20,000-foot Canadian professional stadium for my bachelor party with ten of my closest friends. We chose tableware and sent invitations that Anna and I loved to friends we love.

Sure, wedding planning could be a chore. So many emails. But also so many dinner meetings on the 11th of each month, so many chances to practice my first dance with Anna (she even learned my part), and at least one time she organized the entire seating chart on old business cards on the steps of our apartment as we sat locked out, because … I lost the home keys.

I probably didn’t appreciate the magic of being engaged enough. Luckily, Anna isn’t going anywhere. She’s stuck with me for three weeks in Japan. We just landed. 🇯🇵 by @tschleifer

With traditional Democratic fundraising faltering, a quiet donor group called “The Huddle” is raising millions to push back on Trump — without technically engaging in politics.

But as @tschleifer tells @AliVitali on #WayTooEarly, this isn’t 2016 anymore — and the money just isn’t flowing the way it used to. by @tschleifer

A sunny afternoon in Nob Hill. ✨

Think about how hilly Nob Hill is. Now think about how heavy a camera backpack is. Now think about what 80 degrees feels like. That’s how sweaty I got. 😂 taken in San Francisco, California by @tschleifer

❤️

We left San Francisco in 2023, but knew that when the time came — and it would eventually — we wanted to do our engagement shoot back in our old neighborhood.

Nob Hill is where in 2019 we first moved in together, and it set us on a good path. We learned how rich our neighborhood was especially during the pandemic. That all comes flooding back when we visit. The shop owners. The parks. The buses and the cable cars. The precise amount of exertion felt in your calves as you walk up the hill is still second nature two years later.

Engagement shoots are a little corny, yeah, but so what. We wanted to capture a few slices of life, and we are really excited to get married later this year.
