I painted an image I found in the book “Vanishing Cultures of South Africa” by Peter Magubane.

It portrays a woman taking part in a traditional Zulu dance or culturally known as ukusina at an umemulo (a coming of age ceremony for women). The high energetic kicks accompanied by hard foot stomping demonstrate the traditional dances performed at this ceremony to commemorates the milestone of a Zulu lady entering womanhood. It offers ancestral blessings and shows communal support for her new journey. It is not fully complete but I wanted to show you what I have so far.

South Africa is filled with roots of many cultural identities and with ongoing westernisation and Europeanisation it’s easy to lose touch and sight of the many indigenous cultural practices that exist in our country. This artwork marked the beginning of my journey of looking at the vibrant traditions and cultures that exist in my country, beyond my own. by @tshiala_

Full Of Wonder (2026)
Photomontage using images taken by me (A4, 210 x 297 mm)

To be honest, I can’t fully define my intention for this account yet. For now, I aim to use it as a platform to share my curated pieces—art, clothing, etc.—in hopes of evoking emotion and inspiring others!
