Ever left home and wondered what your dog was doing?

For Tsing Liu (@tsing_liu), thesis project Rest Assured explores a calmer way for dog owners to stay connected with their dogs from afar.

Built as an IoT ambient notification system, the project includes a smart figurine, a tail-tracking harness, and a pressure-sensing cushion. Together, these components create a closed feedback loop that helps owners feel more confident leaving their dogs home alone while supporting a calm, reciprocal connection.

In this interview, Tsing shares how Rest Assured grew from her experience as a dog owner, how the project was presented at the TEI Conference, and what she learned about collaboration, care, and creative technology through DT.

Imagine if, during moments of heightened anxiety, you could once again feel the gentle, familiar caress of a loved one’s hand…

“Stroke Imprint” began with my deep longing for comfort and love expressed through physical touch. After countless nights of prototyping, I quickly realized that the only way to realize the full potential of my concept is having a team of creatives work on a tangible interface with digital presence. So I invited @makedesigncraftit and @rinchong.kim to join, fried a few microcontrollers, and burned a few holes in my hand-knits. There were nights the code broke and so did I, but it was blind faith that kept me going.

As I braced myself for a rejection email from @acmsiggraph on my birthday, I ended up blocking out three days on my calendar to travel to the conference in Vancouver.

But in order to get there, we need a little extra support from you.

Yes, you.

Beloved Jennifer and 3 inkjet prints from “Unmoored.” Will the series be simplified as *abstract eyes* and scraped by image generators when I upload the digital files to my website? Or is it time to update copyright law? taken in Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery by @tsing_liu

It’s been 3 months since I participated in a group exhibit with my photographs. Words can’t express how much it meant to me for everyone who showed up to support me, as a pleasant surprise or planned weeks ahead!

Throughout the making of Neural Signals (Excerpt 1), two people have been more than helpful and generous of their time to me. Thank you @stevopineapple for being in the photo and letting me play around with your camera. And thank you @pstetzer for putting up with my perfectionism during our printing, matting, and framing session.

On view till September 11th as part of the Picturing New York show at @sohophotogallery

Last summer I started working as a full-time photographer in Beijing after 6 months of building my business. This summer I’m thrilled to launch my website and share some of the commercial works I’m most proud of.

If you’re up for drilling a hole in my head, stay tuned for updates on the unfinished projects that led me back to the States. Website link in bio!
