I was so sad to hear that @tsioncafe was closing, not just because I never made it there for a meal, but also because the Owner, @beejhysgursha, was experiencing so much hate & harassment - just for being Israeli. So when I heard about @taaimdiaspora, Ethiopian & Yemenite Shabbat dinners organized by Beejhy & @arielstachel, I knew I had to go.

What an incredible night! We heard stories from Beejhy & Ari’el about where they came from and their journeys to present day, enjoyed Ethiopian & Yemenite food & music, said Shabbat prayers, had conversations with the people around our shared table, and danced around the room.

They’ve created such an amazing gathering that is welcoming to all, and it really makes you realize how diverse it is within the Jewish community. If it’s not already sold out, there’s one more dinner on June 12th, and I highly recommend attending!

Last night, I was thrilled to gather with a diverse group of friends - and new friends to enjoy a really delicious meal and learn about the history, culture, and food of Ethiopia - especially the Jewish community of Ethiopia. We learned about “gursha” which is the traditional Ethiopian practice where one person feeds another a bite of food by hand, symbolizing love, respect, hospitality, and friendship. Thank you to all who joined, and to our host at @tsioncafe in New York City, @beejhy barhani, distinguished chef, author, and cultural bridge-builder who is the cafe’s proprietor.

Ethiopian Teff Matzah / Ya Fassikah kita / Nay Wurenah kicha

1. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of teff with a pinch of salt.
2. Gradually add water to the mixture to create a paste.
3. Let the paste sit for 5 minutes.
4. Warm a skillet over medium heat and add a few drops of oil to prevent sticking.
5. Take a handful of the paste, flatten it out on the pan, and cover.
6. Cook each side for 3-5 minutes.
7. Flip and repeat until each side is fully cooked

Melkam Wurenah/ Fassikah

In a large bowl combine your 2 cups of teff pinch of salt , and add your water gradually to create a paste. Then let it sit for 5 minutes. Next, warm a skillet over medium heat add a couple drops of oil yo the pan so of does not stick. Then take a handful of paste and flatten it out on the pan, then cover. Let reach side cook 3-5 minutes, flip each side and repeat until each side is a warm brown. taken in Tsion Cafe by @tsioncafe

Last night, JCRC-NY was proud to host a joyful interfaith Model Seder ahead of Passover.
