Dear Baseball,

I want to thank you for a lifetime worth of memories. They don’t tell you when you start, that if you are lucky enough to play a while, that it will not only bring you some the happiest times in your life, but also some of the most challenging. Thank you for everything you have taught me as a player and person over the last 26 years. You have been an enormous part in sculpting who I am. Thank you for the life long friendships that you have given me.

I want to say thank you to all my teammates along the way. Thank you to my coaches that have taught me more than just baseball. Thank you to my friends that have been with me throughout my career. Thank you to my family for supporting me through the thick and thin, and flying all over the county to see me. Thank you Anna for being the most patient and supportive wife I could ask for. Thank you God for blessing me with the ability and opportunity to play. I love you all.

If I could talk to the little boy in the last picture, I would tell him…. no matter what, just have fun. Don’t ever take it too seriously, but also, never take a single game for granted. You will have some of the most incredible times in your life playing ball and the game will take you places you would never imagine. I would tell him the bad games are not the end of the world. There will be times when you think you will be benched or cut, just keep playing. When you tell anyone that ever asks that you will grow up to be a professional baseball player…. you’ll be right. Finally, I would tell him the dream isn’t about the final destination, but about the journey and obstacles you will over come along the way. The biggest regret you will hear about is not giving it everything you have, but you won’t need to worry about that one.
