Someone once told me, “We are all common in our own eyes.” That stuck with me.

Often, we see ourselves through the familiarity of our everyday lives, overlooking the extraordinary things God has placed within us.

Add to that the noise of life and the voices of others, and we can begin to lose sight of who we really are and what we carry.

Don’t let what has become familiar to you, or what others have spoken over you, cause you to underestimate what God has placed within you. by @tsutherland

I found this picture the other day and, for the life of me, couldn’t remember where it was taken. Then suddenly it dawned on me.

Here, my son @ashercsutherland is about 11 or 12 years old and had just hit a grand slam home run. ⚾️

I traveled a lot in ministry during his early years and, unfortunately, missed a few games along the way. But I remember how excited I was to be at this game.

After he rounded the bases, he ran out to the stands and gave me the biggest hug. And the ball I’m holding in this picture is the ball that landed on the other side of the fence.

Today, that young boy turns 30 years old.

Looking back, it’s these moments—the games, the hugs, the celebrations, the ordinary days that turned out not to be ordinary at all—that mean more to me now than ever.

Life moves so fast. Somehow, the little boy who hit that grand slam is 30 today. But I can still feel the joy of that moment like it was yesterday.

I’ll never forget a Summer Xtreme Kids Camp @freechapel years ago when one of our guitar players called out. With only 30 minutes before camp started, the only person I could think to call was @_rexbriones_ Without hesitation, he said, “I’ll be there.” He showed up, and the rest is history.

Rex became a permanent part of our @freechapelkidpak worship band, KP7. We shared some of the most fun and unforgettable years leading kids in worship together. We were building something at our church that would impact lives for years to come. Rex was a big part of that story.

I also had the privilege of taking him with me to the Philippines on a mission trip, where he played guitar with our band. I’ll never forget laughing so hard at Rex’s antics that entire week.

Rex brought joy, laughter, and his own unique personality wherever he went. He was one of a kind—carefree, childlike, comedic, dependable, and truly rare. There was no one quite like him.

Those of us who served with him in children’s ministry will never forget him. He never missed a Sunday. He was committed to his craft and faithfully used his gifts to serve the Lord.

Thank you, Rex, for giving your all in this life. I can’t help but imagine you somewhere in Heaven, maybe wearing a space helmet, rocking a purple mohawk, and shredding your guitar for the Lord.

Until we meet again, my friend. You will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. by @tsutherland
