A wish to feel the rush of the waters that formed you

I spent a brief but wonderful week at Penland’s winter residency before the storm brought our time to an early close. So grateful for the focused studio time, the kindness and dedication of the residents and entire Penland community, the winter light on the hills, and watching Jupiter and Orion cross the sky together each night. This work has been unfolding for some time and I left feeling grounded and renewed in its making #penlandwinter #penlandschoolofcraft 🩵 taken in Penland School of Crafts by @tszatan

To move in the dark with and without other bodies and fireflies and shadows cast by full moons that bid us welcome and farewell. To swim in the mirror that is a lake. To gather and walk and gather and walk and dance and sing and listen and dream and be. Feeling incredibly grateful to have met so many wonderful folks this summer, for this time, for this place, looking forward to all that follows. Thank you @skowheganart 💛

Braided Sand is an experimental nonfiction film that contemplates the geologic materiality of photography and communication technologies – from camera lenses to fiber optic cable networks. There is no glass without sand, which itself is the result of hundreds of millions of years of geologic activity. Poetry emerges from seeming paradox — that what is heavy, opaque, and primordial is transformed into material that is transparent, evermore thin, and part of technologies that increasingly speed up lived human temporalities. Filmed at a sand mine, a glass factory, and a nanotech laboratory, Braided Sand moves between observation and abstraction, juxtaposing human and geologic timescales, plunging viewers into churning industrial environments to lay bare the weighty earthly bases of seemingly invisible and immaterial infrastructures. by @tszatan

Soft Unfurling, 2024, Fused Glass, Dynamic Light, 6”x6”x1”

“Soft Unfurling” etched radially across 4 layers of window glass that are then fused into a single block.

Dynamic projector light illuminates the object casting the shadow of each letter onto the singular plane of the wall behind.

If glass was the quintessential material of 20th century imaging technologies and modernist aesthetics, silicon (wafers of which are the ‘bedrock’ of all computing as they become microchips) may be glass’s 21st century analog. by @tszatan

Stratalimn, 2022-2024. Glass, silicon wafers, sand, gelatin silver prints, digital video 🪞🪨

This work contemplates a material relationship whose poetry emerges from seeming paradox — that what is heavy, opaque, and the result of millions of years of geologic activity is transformed into something transparent, evermore thin, and part of technologies that increasingly speed up human experiences. Holding the primordial alongside the instant, this work intends to call forth an underlying and constant oscillation.
