A few months ago, my parents told me they didn’t walk the stage at their own college graduations. My dad got his degree in communications at the University of Illinois Chicago (a great field, if I do say so myself!) and my mom in legal studies at the University of Central Florida (she also got her master’s, but I’m just not there yet).

Both of them were first generation students, and my dad recently lost his own father. Regardless, getting their degrees alone were such huge accomplishments that deserve an incredible amount of recognition.

As I got ready to walk the stage for my own graduation at the University of Florida, it didn’t feel right that I’d be at the center of celebrations my parents never received. Sure, I’d put in the hard work and exhausting hours, but I wouldn’t have achieved this milestone without them — a finish line they reached, but never literally crossed. So, it only felt natural to bring them with me!

With their pictures pinned to the inside of my gown, the three of us walked across the stage together so that not only could they say they did it too, but also as a reminder that I wouldn’t be here without them. 🤍 taken in University of Florida by @ttanyafedak
