I’ve seen quite a few rocks in thin section but nothing quite like this. These are photomicrographs taken at 40-100X magnification in plane and cross polarized light 🔬🪨
The rock is highly altered greenstone with a mineralogy consisting of chlorite, calcite, quartz, iron-oxide, epidote, sericite, opaques, plagioclase feldspar, actinolite and probably some other ones that I missed. The greenstone likely has a mafic volcanic protlith🌋, potentially basalt or basaltic andesite, containing vescicles that were infilled with secondary mineralization during low to mid grade regional metamorphism. The rock likely experienced some form of hydrothermal alteration and/or secondary contact metamorphism during exhumation to the quarry from which it came from, evident by the worm-like textures and high concentration of iron oxides in several areas.

Happy new year! Who knew grains of sand looked so pretty under a microscope? ⏳🔬

Some of my favorite photomicrographs I took from thin sections of fine aggregate (sand) from a recent project at work 👊

All images are taken in cross-polarized light, with quartz wedge compensator plate inserted to accentuate birefringence colors on select slides. Images taken vary from 40X-400X magnification 🔎
