An EV downhole camera was run in the recent workover of Red Raider Well #1 at the Texas Tech University Oilfield Technology Center (OTC). This is a 4,000 ft well set up for rod testing research. The camera, provided by EV, was used to inspect the 9 5/8-inch casing and locate the fluid level and fill at the bottom of the well. This provided a great experience for our students to see wireline operations, provided by The Wireline Group (TWG), as both downhole camera runs and deviation survey runs were made. Special thanks to the Southwestern Petroleum Short Course for providing the funds that have allowed us to perform this workover and services provided by The Wireline Group (TWG) and EV.

The Texas Tech University Rod Lift “Test Bed” can create specific pump fillage conditions “at will” to test new methods for handling the gas slugging commonly seen in horizontal wells.  Thanks to generous donation of a Lufkin Pumping Unit (2.0 controller/VDF) and a Boomerang Edge Device (Boombox), we can test controller-based solutions. By altering pump speed during the stroke, or on the next stroke, we can develop methods to improve pump fillage, and increase our ability to pump-through gas slugs. Gas testing, in addition to rod guide testing, is the focus of our research in the coming months thanks to start-up support provided by the Southwest Petroleum Short Course. For information on how you can support Rod Lift Research & Testing, please contact Dr. Stuart L. Scott (Herald W. Winkler Chair and Professor of Petroleum Engineering).

Texas Tech University has kicked off a new round of Rod Lift Research! A workover has just been completed on Red Raider Well #1 at the TTU Oilfield Technology Center (OTC). This 4,000 ft well is set up for rod testing research. The workover created 5 “Dog Legs” in the 2 7/8-inch tubing by de-centralizing it within the 9 5/8-inch casing. This enables testing under more realistic conditions by generating rod-tubing friction. The latest rod guides will be tested to mitigate the wear. The workover provided a great experience for our students to see well operations up close, including running a downhole camera from EV and wellbore surveys conducted by The Wireline Group (TWG). A special thanks to the Southwest Petroleum Short Course for providing the funds that have allowed us to take this important step. We also want to recognize the services provided by The Wireline Group (TWG), EV, Standard WS, Mesquite Oil Tools and Pate.
