It rained today on the Chesapeake. Blessed to have the time to sit and watch this pair appreciate the bird bath. I go to crazy lengths to entice birds to our home and in return they give many gifts. Herbs that were not here when we moved to the Bay have slowly appeared over the years…purslane, chickweed, cleavers, red clover have all been such a delight to find growing outside my door and become a welcome addition to my apothecary. It’s their way of saying thank you.

I was walking the beach in Florida during Covid and this couple touched my heart. I couldn’t resist the photo. It was such a stressful time but the beaches had been reopened and each person was out seeking their own form of serenity 🌞watching others appreciate their surroundings and nature makes me smile 🌞 These old photos gave me the idea of my new #substack theme 🌞 The sweetness of doing nothing 🌞see link above 😉🧘🏻

Right now my house is filled with unique little nooks and baskets filled w drying herbs 🌱 my husband just loves it 🙃 once the moisture is evaporated I infuse in organic olive oil 🌱 let sit 8-10 weeks and voila! I only use dried herbs for oils 🌱 otherwise fresh is best for tinctures 😉 #yarrow oil in particular creates an incredible fresh addictive scent and is always part of my skin care and first aid regimen 🌱 #greenblessings

There is new life in the air and here is what I’ve been up to 🌱 Violets 🌞 Dandelions🌞Plantain 🌞 Chickweed 🌱 #spring is an herbalist holiday ✨ its fleeting so Im fortunate to make the time to harvest these nutritious medicinal herbs before they wither 🌱

🪻Sweet violets make us smile spreading across our spring lawns🌱 I make vinegar and tincture to extract their moistening calming properties 🌱 they are also yummy to eat and give us antioxidants

🌼 Dandelions benefits are too long to list here but recently infused some in olive oil for a massage oil used to move lymphs and support skin health 🌼 I leave some for the bees…an important flower for early spring survival 🐝

🌱Plantain has just surfaced and Im busy making tincture and salve w organic bees wax 🌱 the oil and salve soothes any rash or insect sting, heals minor wounds with its antimicrobial properties 🌱

✨Last but not least is my star chickweed 🌱 I spent many a day over the past two weeks sitting in the grass with my granddaughter eating this herb by the handfuls 🌱🌱 currently it is being infused into vinegar which will draw out all the nutrients we enjoyed raw such as beta carotene, calcium, iron, potassium and zinc 🌱

its a wonderful world 🌱🌼🐝

We never take this view for granted ✨ Ever. The Chesapeake constantly has something beautiful going on ✨ whether its a magnificent sunset 🌞 or Eagles swiping fish 🦅 🌬️ or watching it slowly freeze ⚓️ or a flock of swans gliding by…the magic never ends ✨⚓️🌞

Im in love with the #yarrow I cultivated this year 🌞 With my first season on Chesapeake I had to be realistic about what I could grow 🌞 yarrow takes a couple of years to fully root in so I thought I would have to skip it but #mothernature often surprises me with gifts ✨ I found yarrow growing wild near me this past spring and borrowed some 🌞 it took beautifully to its new home and I have been blessed with a decent harvest 🌞 plenty of yarrow tincture for the year for such uses as:
🌞Mouthwash (its anti bacterial)
🌞An anti viral remedy to prevent colds and flu
🌞breaks a fever
🌞stops bleeding from minor wounds and nose bleeds
🌞clears up UTI
🌞mosquito repellent (researched by US Army to be more effective than Deet)

Swimming in our skivvies at Dionis 💦after a long hot August day running our shops on #nantucket ⚓️ priceless 🌞a great memory from a few years back ✨ I see so many posts of late trashing our island ⚓️ Yes its crazy w clones invading during the summer months ~ but they pay the bills ~ your blessed if you get to live there or own a business - if you get her you get her ⚓️ ⚓️ so those of you not salty enough ⚓️ stay away 🌬️🌬️

Living on this spot on the #chesapeake has been magical ✨ I thought #nantucket had the best natural light and color I ever experienced…but…I have to say at times this water view rivals the #greylady ⚓️ there isn’t a morning or evening where we just marvel at the changing color, light and movement of the bay ⚓️
