South Africa Fashion Week / Menswear Week 🖤

Grateful to witness some 🔥 fashion and runways by my friends at:
@influhks @lazystacks @danieldujaxco & @idolstitches

The runway never tells the full story of the sacrifice, grind, creativity, discipline and vision it takes to create something that truly moves the culture

From the shows to the real moments in between, this one meant something and was amazing to be a part of

Thank you for the invites Sam and Yusuf 🖤 so proud of you. I firmly believe that the best intersectionality of art, fashion, music, and innovation will always come from the continent of Africa and y’all are living proof of that

Lol side note: designed what I wore for this and (started having it) made just hours before it was time to go…ya girl literally put it on for the first time just 15 min before the first show after begging my beloved tailor to please show a lil less titties. He said no and said it wouldn’t be too much for the right person. Lol he’s doing somebody’s work but it certainly ain’t the Lord above’s 🤣

This week marks 3 months since I started my new role as CEO of Remote Year, a company that enables professionals to work remotely while traveling the world as part of a community for 1-12 months.

I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to pause & reflect on my unbelievable journey here.

As a kid, my family of Vietnamese immigrants could not afford the luxury of travel. I dreamed of the day I could visit the cultures and countries I read about in books.

As a teenager, I saved up money from my side hustles, solicited scholarships and bought a 1-way ticket to Spain to study for 4 months.

As a college student, I studied languages religiously and did 4 study abroad programs & 4 global internships.

As a professional, I worked on global brands, spanning 6 continents, doing extended business trips and expat assignments.

Then, I decided to take off on a sabbatical to travel to 100 countries.

Through each experience, I learned to foster deeper connections, celebrate cultural differences and similarities, amplify the stories of underrepresented people, cultures, and countries, and to make a positive impact everywhere I went.

During that sabbatical, I came across Remote Year and immediately applied to be a customer.

I soon realized I wanted to work for the company and turned down other job offers over 8 months that we were in talks. When Remote Year finally called, I knew that's why I had waited all along.

In Dec 2016, I started a 6 yr adventure building a company and community I deeply love. Through it all, I've always brought my authentic self as an unapologetic woman of color and worked hard to make the community of remote workers and travelers more diverse, global, inclusive, conscious, purpose & impact-driven.

I'm so grateful to @shaunprime @sampessin @gdcaplan @noway_its_trish_k @selina who all paved the way for me to be here.

When I told one of my best friends I was starting this new role, she laughed and said, "That's crazy. You called to be a customer and somehow became the CEO."

God is funny but won't he do it! I'm so thankful I am walking in my personal & professional purpose everyday. Here's to the next chapter 🚀

As someone who loves and is always surrounded by people, I rarely have time or even want a moment to be by myself sometimes. A couple weeks ago, I woke up feeling cold (under 70 degrees), in need of sunshine, water, oxtails, curry goat and live music. I ran to the airport and hopped a flight to the only place that could deliver - Jamaica 🇯🇲

When I told my partner @hardyka24 I had flown down to Jamaica while he was sleeping, he offered to come meet me in a few days. I love him more than anyone else on this earth, but I politely declined his company because I genuinely believe that people should have full identities apart from their other halves, and that to be my best self, I have to actually spend time with myself.

So I went everywhere by myself. To the beach. To dinner. To the bar. To the club. To watch basketball at a sports bar. To explore. To watch sunsets. To sail. All by myself.

Everywhere, people (mostly men, sigh) kept approaching me. And cuz I’m naturally an extrovert, I would respond and make new friends. A few days into my trip, my WhatsApp was filled with dinner and party invites and folks were starting to swing by the crib to pick me up a little too much. I had missed the assignment — to spend time recharging myself. I apologized to everyone I had met, uninvited myself to everything, and spent the rest of the trip by myself.

On one of my nights out, I was sitting at a bar watching the sunset. I didn’t realize I was smiling so hard. A guy came up and said, “You’re not one of those independent, I don’t need a man girls are you?” Lol, when I laughed and said no but I just enjoy my own company, he followed up, “wow so you just sit smiling by yourself all the time? That’s dope. That means you found happiness within yourself.”

Lol yessir, you could certainly say that 🥰 Such a wonderful reminder that we gotta love ourselves first so that we don’t go around seeking others to provide that for us 🥂❤️

Sometimes, I let my mind wander and daydream of lazy days spent swimming in a private villa pool overlooking the ocean. The palm trees would be swaying gently in the wind as I eat fresh dragonfruit and drink from fresh coconuts. My laptop would be in reach from the pool, but I wouldn't really need it because I'd be too busy listening to Ice Cube and caring about absolutely nothing.
I love it when my dreams come true.

My sis told me that some friends said I was crazy “for staying with a man for 7.5 years who hasn't put a ring on it yet.”

At first, I laughed cuz those who know, KNOW. (Lol HE has been trying to lock it down since the 5th day of our relationship). But it reminded me why I never was running to get married or have kids - because I felt like society assumes when a woman isn’t married or with chirren, that somehow she is incomplete.

We celebrate weddings and baby showers and toast women for “leveling up to the next chapter or getting chose”. But, do we show up with that same vigor for women who achieve their dreams, travel the world, grow businesses, maintain close friendships and relationships, buy land and property, and are just simply striving to be good human beings?

Even when people get married, they start counting their anniversaries based on how many years they were married, not how long they’ve been in the whole relationship. Did all those years before the wedding not count or were those for play play? Why is one type of love or union given more weight than another when both are rooted in commitment and devotion?

I come from a family where my grandmothers both dropped out of school in the 2nd and the 8th grade. Both were from rural villages and married in their young teenage years and churned out 10-11 children each. No ma’am.

It’s been 7.5 years with my partner, but there’s not a day that I love him more than I love who I am and how happy I am independently from him. He has always supported my vision to not be “the other half”, but rather “the other whole”.

So to those friends, keep your ring because “I’m more than enough" has a better ring to me. 🤗💍 Here’s a toast to all my bawse ladies and homies continuing to live life on their terms in 2024. 🥂 Happy new year everyone ❤️

As a Vietnamese / Asian woman growing up in the US, I saw so little of myself on TV, in movies, in music, and in literature.

I remember watching Mulan and reading the Joy Luck Club and wondering if there were better representations of us to look up to, besides the stereotypes that we all know martial arts, are all related, and are submissive. 😣

Today, it’s incredible to see doors opening up in entertainment, sports, politics, and boardrooms, with more representation of Asians, especially Vietnamese. We still have a long way to go, but in honor of this month, I wanted to share some of my favorite Viet folks I follow and why:

@amandangocnguyen - civil rights activist and astronaut, 1st Viet to go to space
@hhennie.official - beautiful (role) model, former Miss Vietnam, Miss Universe contestant. Slays while repping for Ede and other ethnic tribes of Vietnam.
@nuocmamafoods @twaydabae @sammy_becool @gaming_foodie @cheftudavidphu - best Viet food-related accounts
@thejeanniemai - fellow Bay Area girl and former host of the Real, constantly breaking grounds for Viet women in entertainment
@vietnameseboatpeople @thevietnamesepodcast - podcasts highlighting Viet stories and people
@vietcetera @jackfroot @phodaculture @growinupviet @littlesaigon.official - media and community platforms for the culture
@yoleendadong @peternguyen - hilarious (comedic) creators
@den_vau @shottaspence @therefugeebaby @mixedmiyagi @thuymusic @kimmese_ss @justatee @tyga - my fave Viet music artists
@k.lynney2 @thejaylinwilliams_ - first viet ballers in the w/nba
@aliwong @karrueche @kehuyquan - actors, personalities in entertainment.
Special mention to Tony Bui for being the first filmmaker ever to win the Sundance Grand Jury & Audience Prize.
@ultimate_soul @haotran Viet friends of mine and leaders I love who are paving the future in Vietnam

Who did I miss? Who else is Vietnamese and making us proud? Let me know so I can support and follow them! ❤️

Happy belated bday Daddy @barackobama!

It's been awhile since I posted pics of our family on social media, but I had to pop out and show the world what an incredible daddy you are.

Auntie Kamala is announcing her VP pick in a few hours, so lemme get in a few words before the news cycle takes over.

I’m grateful that we got to escape the madness in the US even for a few hours just to celebrate you by going to the Olympics in Paris this year.

Watching the games with you has been so much fun. Seeing people all over the world tell you how much you mean to them is incredible to see. I love you so much, Daddy. ❤️

(And for those who keep asking...No, Mommy is not gonna run for VP because she said it would be too much black girl magic. And Daddy says a 3rd term for him isn’t legal and there’s already enough felonies being committed by ex-presidents. LMAO. Yes, that’s his version of a dad joke 😂)

Yall join me in wishing my Daddy @barackobama a belated happy birthday! 🎉🎂4⃣4⃣

When I was younger, I wrote these words to myself in a journal: "Live your life as if you are the sun and never let the darkness take away your light. Radiate happiness wherever you go and laugh and love so hard that even the devil will be intimidated by the thought of your smile."

Life can be hard sometimes, but I never ever let the rainy days outnumber my sunny ones. ☀️💕🌺

Some people like being a big fish in a small pond. I love being a small fish in a big pond. Preferably a really big pond with warm turquoise water, very soft sand, and no one around so I can sing happily at the top of my lungs. 🎶🎵🎶

When I think of moments and memories of pure joy with people I love, it looks something like this. It sounds like uninhibited laughter echoing across a cenote, soft ripples in the water from treading limbs, and the gentle rustling of leaves from the occasional breeze. For just one moment, time stands still because you are grateful to be surrounded by so much friendship, love and natural beauty. 🖤

Sometimes I feel like my life is an unfinished book or movie that's been written out of order. I am never quite sure how I got there, where I am, and where I'm going next. Yet, rather than being unnerving, that thought brings me so much peace and joy.
