Kızlar, toplanın! 📢

İster anonim olarak kağıda yazıp kutuya at, ister mikrofona anlat, ister sadece arkana yaslanıp gül. En yakın arkadaşın uzakta olabilir ama biz buradayız! 💖

🎟️ Biletler bio’daki linkte! Tükenmeden yerini kap.

We’re excited to introduce you to the artists in our exhibition, “Re:HUMANIZE”: a compilation that reclaims the humanity behind the often dehumanized narratives of migration and integration and delves into profound questions regarding identity, belonging, and dignity. This last exhibition of our 10-month bi-exhibitional topic focus is structured around four guiding questions: Am I enough? Will I be seen? Am I one of them? Who am I?
Our goal is to shift the conversation away from abstract legalities and statistics, focusing instead on the personal stories of those behind these terms. In this context, Tuğcan Dökmen Koch shared her artist statement during our selection process:
‌
Born and raised in Ankara, Türkiye, Dökmen Koch moved to London at 17 to study art and design. She lived in London for 18 years and moved to Berlin in February 2024 with her daughter and husband. Since moving to Berlin, she has explored what it means to be from a country and to be Turkish, British, or German. What does it mean to be Turkish in the UK, and what does it mean in Germany? After all, being Turkish in London differs from being Turkish in Berlin. And being in Germany as a Turk who is also a naturalised Brit is something else.

I will be exhibiting my textile work and the photograph of the installation I made in Tuz Gölü with Felix Koch back in 2021, only weeks after giving birth to our daughter, as part of the group show Re:HUMANIZE at the Kulturschöpfer and the Green Hill Gallery, Berlin.

The exhibition is about immigration and integration.
Born and raised in Ankara, I moved to London at 17 to study art and design. I lived in London for 18 years and moved to Berlin in February 2024 with my daughter and husband. Since moving to Berlin, I have explored what it means to be from a country and to be Turkish, British, or German. What does it mean to be Turkish in the UK, and what does it mean in Germany? After all, being Turkish in London differs from being Turkish in Berlin. And being in Germany as a Turk who is also a naturalised Brit is something else.

In my work, I question and explore the influence of a city and a country on one’s identity. As someone who has lived between Ankara, London, and Berlin, I need to share my work to better understand myself. As an artist with a fashion design background, I work with fabrics and colours. My identity question is in the flags, a worldwide recognised visual, textile, and colourful representation of a country’s identity.

Vernissage: 20th September 18:00
Dates: 20th September – 12th December 2024

The exhibition brings together the work of ten artists, each offering a unique perspective on the personal and varied experiences of migrants.
Migration and integration are often discussed in terms of statistics, legalities, and economic impact, but “Re:HUMANIZE” aims to shift the focus back to the individuals at the heart of these journeys.

Through diverse artworks, the exhibition explores the fundamental questions of identity, belonging, and self-worth.

Golden Lane, The Bond, December 2023

I made this installation a few months before we left London with the help of Felix and our neighbours Kate and Simon. For years, we waved at each other from our facing windows. We went through lockdown separately but together. The unique facade and the openness of the Golden Lane flats allowed this neighbourhood to become a friendship and a feeling of being part of a community.

Four months ago, we moved to Berlin as a family after living in London for almost two decades. Now, my life is spread out between even more cities and countries. An invisible net keeps connecting all of these places, people, and memories. How poetic.

Barbican, 2023
Photoshoot for the Cumhuriyet Pazar interview. 29/10/2023

First Barbican, then Golden Lane has been in the background of my life since 2016. I got married and had my child here. I got my driver’s license and passport here (yes, these are important too). I spent the lockdown here. I worked hard here. I developed the layering tulle technique that I love so much again here. I decided to branch out to the fine art here. We decided to move to Berlin here.

I’ve been in London since 2006, but grew the most here. I will miss it. 🤍
