Who invented fantasy football? 🏈 It started in 1962, when Oakland Raiders part-owner Bill Winkenbach and two friends invented a new game in a New York hotel during a long road trip. Their league had eight teams, the very first pick was quarterback George Blanda, and every Monday they added up the points by hand from the newspaper. Why did neighbors visit at midnight? 🌙 For centuries in Europe, many people were wide awake after midnight. Some went next door, others stayed in and prayed. They weren't losing sleep: They went to bed around nine, slept about three hours, stayed awake for an hour or so, then slept again until dawn. They even had names for it: first sleep and second sleep. Why? Long, dark nights may be the reason. When scientists gave people fourteen hours of darkness a night, by week four they usually slept in two parts too. Then street lights arrived, people stayed up later, and the break slowly disappeared. So waking up at night may be older than your alarm clock. Follow for more backstories. #SleepHistory #History #HistoryFacts #DidYouKnow #FunFacts by @tuka.frames
Why is Election Day on a Tuesday? 🐴 In America, Election Day is always a Tuesday in November. Congress set that day long ago for presidential elections, back when most Americans were farmers and getting to the polls could take a whole day by horse and buggy. Historians say Sunday was for church and Wednesday was often market day, so Tuesday worked best. Later, elections for Congress moved to the same Tuesday too. Why is a marathon 26.2 miles? 🏃 Nearly 60,000 runners take on the New York City Marathon, but the first Olympic marathon, from the Greek town of Marathon to Athens, was about 25 miles. The odd 26.2 comes from the London Olympics: the race started at Windsor Castle with royal children watching, and after 26 miles the runners entered the stadium and ran 385 more yards to a finish line right in front of the royal box. Who really invented daylight saving time? ⏰ Every fall, most of America turns its clocks back an hour, and many people think Ben Franklin invented daylight saving time. But Franklin only joked in a Paris newspaper that people should rise with the sun to save candles, and the first real plan to change the clocks came from George Vernon Hudson in New Zealand, who wanted more daylight after work to catch bugs. Why does candy corn look like corn? 🌽 When candy corn was born, about half of American workers were farmers, so candy makers shaped it like a crop and even sold it as chicken feed, with a rooster on the box. Kids ate it all year round, and it only became a Halloween candy decades later, when trick-or-treating spread. Why is the Statue of Liberty green? 🗽 When the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France, opened in New York 140 years ago this week, it was brown, the color of a penny, and the salty sea air turned its copper green over a few decades. The government thought the green was damage and wanted to paint it, but people protested and engineers found the green actually protects the copper, so only the inside got painted and the outside stayed green. Why do we carve pumpkins on Halloween? 🎃 The first jack-o’-lanterns weren’t pumpkins: in Ireland, people carved scary faces into turnips to keep wandering spirits away, and legend says Stingy Jack, who tricked the devil, wandered the night with a glowing coal inside one. Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America, home of the pumpkin, where carving became a Halloween tradition. Why is it called the World Series? ⚾ This week the Brewers and Rays meet in the World Series, but the story starts in 1884, when the champions of two rival leagues met and the winner was called “world champion.” In 1903, organizers gave a brand-new series the grand name “World’s Championship Series” to draw bigger crowds, and it later shrank to just “World Series” (no, not after a newspaper). Why is Canada called Canada? 🍁 In 1535, two young local guides pointed French explorer Jacques Cartier toward “kanata”, their word for “village”. Cartier used the name for the entire region, mapmakers copied him, and in 1867 “Canada” won over fancy new names like Tuponia and Borealia.
