Tohkon Classic 28. Tough but very exciting bracket! Lost in the bronze match in GS….

Judo is really about mental × technique × physique (心技体)—in that order of difficulty to develop, but all three must be developed.

It gets more fun as you age, like a fine wine?

Had a fun trip to @oxford_uni @oxfordsbs Center for Corporate Reputation’s annual reputation symposium. I had five different occasions to visit UK in the past 6 or so years, and for various reasons, they were never materialized. I’m glad I finally made it this time! taken in Oxford University, Oxford UK by @tukasuy

Congratulations to newly-minted “DR.” Jun Park for successfully defending his dissertation today! It was a lot of fun playing a role in helping him navigate through his doctoral program journey in various capacities.

He is off to an awesome job as a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the University of Kansas. Exciting future ahead!

On my way back from a fun weekend stay in Austin, TX, filming @satoshiishii0141 s Judo instructional videos!

Over the two-day shoot, we covered practical, high-precision, and very high-level Judo techniques. A lot of the details are the kind of “secret” stuff you cannot really learn elsewhere unless you train with the world’s best. No textbook goes this deep.

A special lecture at the ILC faculty fellow workshop at the Illinois Leadership Center was such a fun experience. We discussed the fundamentals of the organizational challenges associated with adopting new technological innovations and some preliminary insights into overcoming them.

It is always fun to discuss my favorite case by historian Elting Morison on the adoption of the continuous-aiming gun by the US Navy—a case written 60 years ago about a story that happened about 120 years ago. I always start my Master’s course, BADM 514: Managing Innovation, with this case because it sets up the baseline dilemma so beautifully—about how hard it is for someone in an organizational bureaucracy to champion innovation, even if is clearly of benefits to the organization and that requires so little cost to implement. The default response by any reasonably enduring social systems is to perpetuate the status quo and resist change. The rest of the course is to basically upack this dilemma in depth.

Technologies change rapidly—most recently, AI—but the basic human nature has not changed much and an organization’s responses (as a social system) to changes like this tend to follow predictable and familiar patterns still. History tells us a lot about what might happen in the future.
