Huge thanks to @rotoruacanopytours for hosting our family on Sunday. Our youngest was super worried about the idea of zip lining, but he ended up loving it and not wanting it to end. by @tumutu

A lovely evening with our Canadian whanau showing off the amazing @treewalknz.

Perfect conditions for our after dark exploring with the kids, friendly and helpful staff, stunning light installations and sculptures set amongst the Titokorangi and Whakarewarewa Forest backdrop, made for a very special time with beloved friends.

On the morning of Monday 25th July 2022, after battling illness for the last few months, Poppa Des Kavanagh passed peacefully in the Clive family home, surrounded by his loved ones.

Beloved husband of Nanna Kathy, father of Janine and her siblings, Grandfather to my boys Aidan and Anton and their wonderful cousins, the chief of clan Kavanagh leaves a legacy of love, fun and kindness.

The entire family has been on hand to share in Poppa's palliative care in his last days, and the endeavour has been a huge outpouring of aroha and manaaki, and it has been a true privilege to be a part of the effort.

It is difficult to accurately contextualise the scope of our loss. The way in which Janine tells the stories of growing up, Des was the archetypal fun dad, and it has been lovely and entertaining hearing from his lifelong childhood buddies about how the early years were full of antics, mischief and what we would legally call "near misses" these days.

Over the weekend my brother Tak pointed out to me that he had never had anything but warmth and kind words from Des, and its true that for at least for the last 23 years of my time with him I can report never having heard him speak in anger. From my perspective Des was a prospective father-in-law first, then a friend, and then later a beloved hands-on grandfather to my children. The last few days have seen the family collectively trawling through our photo libraries, and it has been of great comfort to have so many shared precious moments to look back on.

Des is currently lying in state in the family home in an open casket, and visits from family and friends are welcome (as long as you aren't sick or feeling ill).

On Thursday 28th JUL at 5pm we will hold a vigil for Des at the Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Havelock North, where we will officially bless and seal his casket, before taking him away for one more night at home.

On Friday 29th JUL we return to the same Church for the funeral service and this will start at 11am, followed by tea and coffee, then on to the committal at the local Havelock Cemetery.

10 years of @instatakpics and I bringing you the @mountainbikerotorua with more people involved and to be thanked than can be tagged in posts. A saying that we talk about a lot in our circles is about knowing your whakapapa and acknowledging the efforts of those who walked the path before and with you. Amazing that our Iwi allow and continue to support Recreational activity development on their whenua, and that such a great relationship has been nurtured with RLC and Timberlands and Red Stag, and also the efforts of the RMTBC and later the Trails Trust.

From our mentors and original business partners Nick and Kimi who helped convince me to come home to Rotorua, Tak, Nick and Kimis efforts before I touched down back in town, OG business partner Dave Joy's advocacy and sheer chutzpah to wedge a foot in the door to get MBR going, our wonderful extended MDA guiding and admin team in its many seasonal forms, our mates like Rich from our Htown days that always made themselves available to be sounding boards, our core MBR teams of different eras, our advocates and partners in the community like Dave and Gaz, and the tautoko that we have received it has been a heck of a journey so far. by @tumutu
