Kyle Carman, interim Fire Chief for the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department, fist bumps a fellow Firefighter during the Tunnel to Towers Foundation 5K run honoring victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, at Tempe Beach Park in Tempe, Arizona, Sept. 13, 2026.

Carman was carrying a flag honoring Gary Herold, a man who died in the South Tower while guiding his coworkers to the stairwell during the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Gary’s brother, John Herold, was a volunteer event director for the Tunnel to Towers memorial in Tempe, Arizona. The event brought together survivors, first responders, service members, and veterans to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

Our why….

When we were asked to assist the T2T Foundation and help support their mission in Arizona, we were honored, excited and grateful but also afraid of not having the experience to handle the task.

We decided right away that our mission with T2T would be lead by our heart and from the overwhelming feelings of loss we felt on 9/11/2001. My brother Gary perished in the South Tower and Stella and I had several friends who were lost that terrible day.

With Honor, Respect, and Gratitude, we dove into our mission and soon learned that the people around us, friends, neighbors, businesses and T2T supporters were willing to assist and help support T2T.

Gratitude. It’s a powerful word that is not big enough to explain our feelings to all of you who have touched our hearts on this journey. T2T is a family. Our family has grown and changed over the years but it is undeniably FAMILY.

To all of you that hold T2T and its mission in your heart, you are the lifeblood of what T2T is all about. Stepping up and making a positive difference. For those who have stepped up for our community and country. It’s a beautiful thing.

Thank you for living the mission “While we are here, let us do good.”

The average beginner completes a 5K in 32 to 40+ minutes (finishing the 5K by jogging steadily or using a run/walk method). Breaking 30 to 35 minutes is a common early milestone.

The Tunnel to Towers Tempe, AZ or NYC 5K may take a little longer due to the camaraderie, sense of purpose, and the “Let Us Do Good” attitude!

There are 2,977 reasons, 343 rescuers, and 60 protectors watching over us as we start and complete our 5K journey each year.

However long it takes for you to complete the 5K, always know that your commitment to Never Forget will last a lifetime.

That my friends is the true meaning of why we gather, walk or run. by @tunnel2towerstempe

2026 T2T Tempe, AZ Follow the Footsteps Award recipient-

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - The police officer who stopped an armed suspect who had allegedly just wounded nine people during a mass shooting in downtown has been identified.

Officer Tanner Wolverton, a 7 year veteran of the Tucson Police Department, was the Hero First Responder who confronted the armed suspect.

The incident unfolded around 2 am July 19, 2026 when Officers working patrol in the Downtown District heard gunshots near the 100 block of East Congress Street.

Wolverton spotted the suspected shooter running with a weapon while numerous bystanders were nearby and in the suspect's path. The Officer ordered the suspect to drop his weapon, but he refused to comply, according to the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team.

Wolverton then fired his department-issued firearm, striking the suspect before taking him into custody and providing first-aid. Officers & Tucson Fire Department members treated all nine victims at the scene.

All nine victims and the suspect were taken to a local hospital for additional treatment, and all victims are expected to survive. Investigators learned the suspect had been involved in a verbal confrontation on the sidewalk before pulling out a handgun and firing multiple times, PRCIT said.

Nine people were struck during the mass shooting.

Thank you Officer Wolverton for your Super Hero powers. So many more lives could have been affected if not for your quick reaction.

We were in Detroit at a NAPO law enforcement convention when we heard about this incident and it was the talk of the convention!! It is an honor to present you with the Follow the Footsteps Award!!

Lately we’ve heard the phrase; “people forgot 9/11.”

How can anyone say that when you take a look at the
pictures from this weekend’s T2T NYC 5K?!?!

The news was predicting torrential rain, gusty winds and then the official state of emergency declared due to the nor’easter affecting parts of NY….

We are certain a few stayed home due to logistics & possibly not being able to travel however a good 39,990 (or more) people showed up to honor the lives lost on 9/11 and all those affected by the years following.

Let me tell you, it was cold, it was windy, it was rainy & wet at times shivering when the wetness went through all the layers. We all showed up anyway. We stood for those that can’t any longer.

Now tell me, do you really think, after experiencing this weekend, whether you were there, saw it on the news or on social media:
Do you really think people forgot 9/11????

I think NOT!!!!

God Bless you ALL 🙏 by @tunnel2towerstempe
