Just before Thanksgiving I spent four days in the @tiny.telephone recording studios with @turas.ensemble (@bethanyhlll & @vafraser) and @in.sta.matt for their new project, my first time back in the producer’s chair in a very long while. After decades of watching so many extraordinary producers work — especially Judy Sherman, whose sessions I’ve been lucky to sit in on more times than I can count — I tried to carry some of those lessons into the studio with me. Judy’s ears are legendary of course, but what has always struck me as extraordinary is her ability to hold a space in which artists can be their most creative, energized, and focused, for an extended period of time. I hope I brought a little bit of that spirit into the room.

This project is a beautiful and moving blend of the fully notated and the fully improvised, which meant the sessions swung delightfully between precision and discovery. Over the course of the sessions Turas and Matt built, day by day, layer by layer, an intimate and imaginative story world that came ever more in focus.

It was a pleasure to be supporting that work, along with our incredibly agile and adaptable engineer @george_corytodd, and guest musicians harpist @lizgobbomusic and cellist @lewispatzner, who transformed the materials they were given in totally unexpected and inspiring ways.

Many thanks to Turas and Matt for thinking of me for this project! I can’t wait for people to hear this project when it’s ready. taken in Tiny Telephone Oakland by @turas.ensemble
