A chairde, an invitation to join us in ceremony for Samhain on November 1st at the Mill. This is the fourth day in a series of six, where we pause to reflect and celebrate the important spiritual festivals of the sacred circle of the year, the cosmic breathing process of the Earth. Certain words uniquely capture the deep connection between the people and the land. One such word is "colpa", a term that dates back to an era before modern measurements like acres or hectares became commonplace. This word represents a measurement of land based not on its size, but on its capacity to sustain life; specifically, the grazing potential for one cow, six sheep, or twelve goats.

The concept of a colpa reflects a time when sustainability was the cornerstone of farming practices on this island, long before the pursuit of profitability reshaped our relationship with the earth. It symbolizes an approach to agriculture that values quality over quantity, focusing on the inherent fertility and ecological resilience of the land.

The ancient Irish understood that to truly assess a piece of land's value, one must spend time with it, learn its rhythms, and respect its capabilities. Our ancestors were keen observers of nature, rewarded with lush growth and robust livestock, as noted in early references to Ireland’s exceptional agricultural bounty.

This connection to the land persists deeply within the Irish spirit, whether one is tilling the soil here or feeling the pull of the homeland from afar. The legacy of the colpa reminds us of the importance of building a relationship with our environment, one that honors its limits and potentials.

Let's rekindle our commitment to understanding and respecting the land, inspired by the wisdom of those who walked it before us. Here’s to nurturing the enduring bond between the Irish people and their cherished landscape. Have you ever connected with the land in a way that goes beyond mere measurements? What does sustainability mean to you in the context of agriculture or your daily life? How can we apply the principles behind the concept of a colpa to today’s challenges in farming and environmental stewardship?

We couldn't be happier to see our dear friend Mickey Dunne receive the Gradam Ceoil TG4 Lifetime Achievement Award; one of the highest honours in Irish traditional music.

For almost a decade, Mickey has shared his extraordinary gift with our Turas d'Anam journeys, welcoming our groups with the haunting beauty of the uilleann pipes, his songs, stories, humour and generous spirit. Every visit leaves a lasting mark on those who meet him.

A master piper, teacher, craftsman and one of the great custodians of Ireland's Traveller piping tradition, this recognition is richly deserved.

Comhghairdeas ó chroí, a Mhickey. We are honoured to call you a friend and grateful that so many of our travellers have experienced your music over the years. 💚

Nóirín Ní Riain and I continue the six pointed pilgrimage of Díseart D’anam. These ceremonies are deeply feminine, earth-based, Irish-centred explorations of the great mysteries of Christianity, with nature, song, poetry, ritual and communal exploration/conversation at the core, outside of the institutions.

After a special ceremony on Good Friday to begin the journey, we continue with the great mystery of Pentecost, An Chincís, on Saturday May 16th. (Note the date change from May 22nd) May 16th also happens to be the feast day of St Brendan the Navigator. We will touch in on that too.

More details of the full journey are available in PDF through my page.

Booking for the event is through Eventbrite or directly through me.

Nóirín and I are delighted and stirred to announce this six pointed pilgrimage through the most profound Christian Mysteries for a yearly cycle, with traditional Irish song and elements of Celtic Christianity as a doorway into a communal exploration of the felt sense of what these mysteries are about and how their contemplation can enrich our lives on personal, social, spiritual levels, in 2026 and into the future.

With all of the deeply seeded corruptions and inversions in institutions that proclaim to be a “house of God”, we feel the desire to create our own “teach an phobail”, the people’s house, where we can gather as equals and explore the Christian story. I feel that the greatest victory of the corrupt institutions would be to rob us of a true Christianity. As Moriarty felt, it is a truly epic, initiatory, passionate path of the heart, but unsurprisingly so many of us are in a sort of hangover state from the repression and corruption that we associate with how the church has strangled it for its own ends. I feel it unwise to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

“Bright Angel Trail is our space journey to Earth. It is a journey in three phases: ‘Gethsemane, Golgotha, Garden of the Sepulchre. The Triduum Sacrum is the only space journey worth embarking on” - John Moriarty

Through traditional song, poetry, ceremony, ritual, the elements, the Irish language, Nóirín and I will be holding space for us to journey from the descent of Good Friday, through the spiritual fires of Pentecost, through the Assumption of Mary, through Samhain, to the winter solstice and the birth of the light at Christmas and back again to the descent of Aoine an Chéasta.

We begin on April 3rd, Good Friday, 2026 at Jim of the Mills.

Tickets for the ceremony are through evetbrite which is linked in my page and you can also reach out to me directly. We also have a pdf for those who would like more info - it’s also in the bio.

We look forward to embarking on this wild and mystical ride with you 💫🌙✨ by @turasdanam
