I went to Taiwan for the food and it didn't disappoint — after watching the NYE fireworks at Taipei 101, I started at pace and managed to eat at 8 Bib Gourmand restaurants in the first 5 days only spending about £3 a pop (also squeezed a fantastic sushi omakase in there). But it was also a trip I'll remember for the people: the family I hitchhiked round Alishan with, drinking 58% Kaoliang with pilots in Puli, the amazing meal with Chien-Ya's family in Kaosiung, dancers at the psychedelic free party, the Paiwan people who spent an hour showing us once-looted treasured artifacts returned to Taiwan, stargazing on the southern penisula with old friends, the couple who insisted on paying for my Yushan shuttle, and my winter hiking buddies at 4,000m. Three weeks was only enough to scratch the surface, but I have great memories of bucket list flights, meals and mountains. taken in Taiwan by @turkeyphant

🇵🇦 Panama - colonized by the Spanish, looted by Harri Morgan, adopted by Gran Colombia and, in more recent history, visibly shaped by the influence of immigration and US interests. The famous canal and skyline give the impression of modernity, but I found myself enjoying the simple Caribbean reefs and the breezy villages nested in volcanic craters the most.

🇨🇷 Costa Rica - blessed with abundance from volcanos, mountain ranges and cloudforest to two jungle-lined coasts overflowing with flora and fauna.

These days it's an expensive overtouristed theme park, but there still are some real gems away from the pura vida inanity and bland expat/immigrant-fueled gentrification.

Monte Fitz Roy - centrepiece of one of the world's most iconic mountain ranges. We were there at the same time as Jim Reynolds free soloed both up AND down in arguably one of the most outstanding and epic ascents of all time. It was a long four hour hike each way into Laguna de Los Tres but worth it for an utterly breathtaking sunrise (scroll right for the time-lapse).

ice cold river crossings, dust storms and glaciers, two tyrolean traverses, 60+ km/h winds, very slippery moraine scree, tons of vert, the terrifying paso del viento and lots of yummy calafate berries. four very long and very hard days of steep backcountry hiking.

all worth it for something most people don't get to see: epic glimpses of the patagonian ice field and the most stunning sunrise ever over bahia de los tempanos. it was truly awe-sinpiring and absolutely humbling. one of the hardest hikes i've ever done, but probably the most magical.

GR131 La Palma — a three day trail with the same vertical gain as hiking from base camp to the summit of Everest. 67 km in total, this gran recorrido crosses the island from coast to coast around the volcano's caldera.
