Escaping the confines of ‘Working From Home’ for a cute cafe and a good walk and a little sunshine - at least once a week. Even though, I try to mix it up…Union Station is one of my favorite escapes to return to.

Checked out Harold Smith’s Covers exhibit exploring the complexities of Black Masculinity in America. The Art Gallery at Kansas City Public Library is the perfect midday escape. Grabbed some coffee & then worked from the rooftop for a bit.

🎶🌷you gave me the kiss of life 🌷🎶
.
This Spring, I picked a weekday to explore, to eat at a new cafe, squeeze in a midday concert, walk a different route...
.
I try to make the most of my weekends and a few weeknights. But, the hum dum of the work week can be taxing....
.
Looking forward to what the summer will hold.

I had so much to do I debated if taking the time to go for a walk and grab a cup of good coffee was a good idea.
.
Hit the corner and ran into this “Stop and Smell The Flowers” art display.
.
It felt like The Creator was whispering a reminder...

🎵🎶 You know how to make me feel so good 🎵🎶
.
Record shopping always gets me right.
.
P.S. Sharon Paige added some special magic to that Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes track. I was curious how this track performed on the charts, but I was surprised to learn it wasn’t released as a single! I feel like it’s an old school staple.

I was looking for the soundtrack to Brown Sugar staring Sanaa Lathan & Taye Diggs.
.
What I found instead was this! A 3 lp box set that is a companion to Donald Bogle’s Brown Sugar book and PBS documentary.
.
It’s the perfect soundtrack for a rainy day with songs from Ella Fitzgerald, Ethel Waters, Hazel Scott, Lena Horne, Carmen McRae, Josephine Baker, Aretha Franklin, and many others. I was surprised that a few tracks are pretty brazen.
.
I would love for an updated version of this to be released with a more sweeping inclusion of songs over the decades and themes outside of love & man troubles. @pbs @rsd_essentials @famscoalition

Who’s your favorite Black Female Superstar? by @turnyourlovearound

When I first started this page, I wanted to document my hobby. I have always loved pursuing a record store. I love finding a great album cover or discovering a “new” artist or scoring a gem in the bargain bin. I love reading the liner notes.
.
As I continued to build and capture my collection, I found myself researching. Where is the artist now? How well did this song do on the charts? How well did the album do on the charts? Why did the artist switch labels?
.
I discovered researching and documenting collecting went well with collecting books which I already loved - especially art and culture books. And best of all, all of these things allowed me to study and appreciate Black history and artistry more deeply. I have learned and am still learning so much.
.
I have also discovered how disproportionately our artists and entertainers are reported, represented, celebrated, and remembered.
.
I have come to the realization that it is up to us to better document and celebrate ourselves. We have more tools than ever to better research, capture, and share our history and culture. It is up to us to create legacy pages, digitize old magazines and documents, and write the blogs and the books.
.
It’s up to us to read and share what we can. To ask for and support compilations, books, and other work that document and capture our stories. It’s up to ask to demand archives be dug through and exhibits created.
.
I am determined to do my part - listening and sharing songs, stories, and pictures. by @turnyourlovearound

Brown Sugar: Eighty Years of American Black Female Superstar. I’ve been collecting every edition written by Donald Bogle I can. This edition was published 40 years ago.
.
I recently discovered @pbs created a 4 part documentary based on this book. I’m hoping will get a refreshed series and book for the anniversary. Have you seen it?

New Affair by The Emotions
.
The Emotions are one of my favorite groups - boy or girl! With their fantastic harmonies and overall vocal performance, it’s no wonder VH1 designated them as one of most influential girl groups of all time.
.
Released in 1981, this album is a great blend of rnb, dance, and ballads. The Emotions once again partnered with Maurice White for this project. My favorite tracks are New Affair & All Night, All Right.
.
I’m eagerly awaiting a special vinyl pressing celebrating legacy of The Emotions. 👀 @staxrecords @rsd_essentials @theemotionslegacy by @turnyourlovearound

The Pointer Sisters released their seventh studio album, Special Things, in 1980.
.
The album features their second gold-certified single, "He's So Shy". It’s my favorite song on the album! Although originally slated to be “She’s So Shy” for as an Australian singer, the Pointer Sisters version is magic.

Arabian Nights, The second album, by The Ritchie album was released in 1976. One of four concept albums released by the group, it had too featured a central theme & a long medley running over 15 minutes.
.
“The Best Disco in Town”, peaked at No. 1 on the Hot Dance/Disco chart and No. 12 on the Hot Soul Singles. It pays homage to other disco hits from Donna Summer, Labelle, KC & Sunshine Band, The O’Jays, and more.
.
My favorite track is “Baby, I’m on Fire🔥”
.
The Ritchie Family @theritchiefamily1 was founded by Jacques Morali, the producer of The Village People. The original lineup was Cassandra Wooten, Cheryl Mason Jacks & Gwen Oliver (pictured left to right). by @turnyourlovearound
