SAUDI FILM NIGHTS BRINGS CONTEMPORARY SAUDI CINEMA TO SOUTH AFRICA THIS OCTOBER

Joburg Film Festival presents the Saudi Film Commission’s first South African presentation across Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, 8–14 October 2026

Saudi Film Nights will make its first South African presentation this October, inviting audiences in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town to discover a selection of contemporary Saudi cinema from 8–14 October 2026. Presented in South Africa by the Joburg Film Festival (JFF) on behalf of the Saudi Film Commission, the programme brings together two feature films and two shorts across four screenings, with post-screening Q&As offering audiences the opportunity to engage directly with attending Saudi filmmakers.

The tour opens in Johannesburg at the Lesedi Theatre within Joburg Theatre, one of Johannesburg’s best-established performing-arts institutions in Braamfontein, where Night Courier and Irtizaz will screen on Thursday, 8 October and Friday, 9 October. It then travels to Durban, where Siwar and First Funeral Day will be presented at The Playhouse Company’s Drama Theatre, KwaZulu-Natal’s major cultural and performing-arts centres, on Sunday, 11 October. The same pairing closes the South African tour at Cape Town’s historic Labia Theatre on Wednesday, 14 October.

The films move between dark humour, family drama and intimate social observation, showcasing the range of creative voices and perspectives shaping contemporary Saudi cinema. Night Courier follows Fahad, a struggling delivery driver navigating Riyadh after dark, whose urgent need for money draws him into a dangerous illicit world. Irtizaz offers a sharp, playful take on the pressures of marriage, as a young divorcee attending a funeral is pushed by her mother into an awkward contest for approval. Inspired by true events, Siwar tells the story of a Saudi and a Turkish family whose lives are upended when DNA tests reveal that their children were accidentally switched at birth. First Funeral Day is an intimate drama about an estranged father who returns to his former home following the death of his child, forcing a family to confront grief, distance and long-held truths. by @tutonecommunications
