Announcing TuYo Theatre’s next production: The world premiere of Our Lady Of The San Diego Convention Center by Mario Vega and Directed by Maria Patrice Amon in collaboration with Casa Familiar.

In the Spring of 2021, the San Diego Convention Center is being used as a holding facility for young asylum seekers. Milli and Lupe are hired as youthcare workers to help take care of the unaccompanied migrant children being held there. As the months go by, they must adjust to the changing rules and restrictions at their job.

Vega’s “Our Lady of the San Diego Convention Center” tackles the heavy subject of immigration with care and humor, capturing the stories of these migrant girls and encouraging audiences to have a conversation about not just migration, but the consequences of borders on children and our responsibility as human beings to take care of each other.

Production runs September through October 2026. Dates and touring calendar up on sale August 14th! by @tuyotheatre

“Our Lady of the San Diego Convention Center brings forward a real issue through real stories from our city that deserve to be told. It puts a human face on family separation and asks audiences to sit with the consequences of an immigration system that can leave children separated from the people they love.”
Lucía Serrano, Broadway World SD

Art continues to be a powerful storytelling tool. 🩵

ACLU-SDIC Executive Director Norma Chávez-Peterson recently moderated a panel after a showing of the new play, produced by @tuyotheatre in collaboration with @casa.familiar, “Our Lady of the San Diego Convention Center.”

The play follows two youth-care workers supporting unaccompanied migrant children at the San Diego Convention Center when it was being used as a holding facility for young people seeking asylum in 2021.

The panel discussed the importance of sharing stories, like the ones highlighted in the show, on asylum, migration and the consequences of borders on our most vulnerable.

The show runs through October 18 – visit the link in bio for dates and locations across San Diego.
