❤️‍🔥 The Worlds of Tomorrow ❤️‍🔥
I believe freedom is a void you sing into,
or maybe it is the song.
I believe hope is the end of the sentence
when everything you meant is no longer possible,
but what has been said is finally finished.

I lived my life wanting to believe
that there was no more evil to be done,
that we had grown full and nauseous on our violence
and if we could just breathe,
if we could just understand,
we could make the pain stop.

I don’t know what to believe in anymore.
I gave my blood to a goddess of justice
and my heart to a martyr, but
my body is iron and sand;
my poems are spit and wind;
and not bread,
and not papers,
and not their youngest daughter back.

I want to believe that there are protons
resisting, flickering in the oblivion,
just the smallest things.
Though they are smaller
than the baby's fingers, smaller
than a torn veil,
and do not make up for anything.

I want to believe there is a voice
louder than a nation's intent to kill.
I want to believe that the people and their soft hands,
their warm jaws, their magnetic eyes,
that their God knows their prayers.
I want to believe that humanity amounts to
something beautiful,
that they make us amount
to something beautiful.

I want to believe that we can be saved,
but I don't want to have to believe in saviors
anymore. I want to just believe. I want, I want,

I want to believe that there are fields of olive trees,
and knafeh dripping simple syrup
in the Worlds of their Tomorrows.
I want to believe that young boys fish until dusk
in Lake Kivu and women laugh
until they topple from their braiding chairs.
I want to believe that the night goddess-sky over Juba
and Khartoum winks in pleasure and music drifts
over the savanna and fills the streets.
I want to believe that a feathered serpent sleeps,
in peace, in the hearts
of his people and a drum beat
heats the floor under their feet.

I believe our people have love enough
to make our worlds beautiful
again. We just want tomorrow
to be beautiful.
