The new rankings are in! We are thrilled to announce that the Jackson School of Geosciences has been ranked the No. 4 Earth Science program in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Last semester, Geeta Persad, an assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, created a unique way for climate system science students to get the visceral, hands-on experience of a field trip while studying complex global earth system model data on supercomputers — a visit to the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC)!For the education component of her National Science Foundation CAREER Award, Persad developed a pilot earth system modeling field trip at @taccutexas. Eleven undergraduate students from her GEO 416W “Climate, Water, and the Environment” class came out to TACC for the day to build their own visualization targeting a specific scientific question concerning extreme rainfall. “The goal was to give the students a hands-on way of understanding how dimensions like climate model uncertainty, internal climate variability, climate metric choice, and future emissions scenario affect the trajectory of extreme rainfall events worldwide,” Persad said.A classic component of a geosciences education is fieldwork. Time spent in the field helps classroom concepts take on a tangible reality, as students see with their own eyes the geological processes that shape the world. But for climate students, this kind of field experience isn’t really possible. Climate processes tend to take place on huge scales, often at varying levels in the atmosphere.This computational field trip helped climate science students see data in a new light and learn first-hand about the computational processes that turn complicated climatic processes into visualizations. The workflow for this experience was built by Persad, the department’s computational geoscientist Cameron Cummins, the TACC visualization staff and software developers at Los Alamos National Lab. 📷: @taccutexas by @txgeosciences

Research Assistant Professor Danielle Touma is a co-author of a new report published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine on extreme event attribution – a field of science that analyzes individual extreme weather events and quantifies the extent that human-caused climate change influenced them. The report shows that human-caused climate change is altering the frequency and intensity of several types of extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, heat waves, and extreme rainfall. While Touma contributed to all parts of the report, she mainly provided expertise on the representation of extreme climate events in climate models and observational datasets, and the state of extreme event attribution of extreme precipitation, drought, and wildfires. “The biggest takeaway from this report is that this field of climate event attribution is maturing at a high level given its rapidly expanding needs,” said Touma. “This information allows communities to understand how we assess the impacts that climate change has already caused, and how to begin adapting to changes expected under warmer climates.” This year’s report also includes an assessment of the state of the emerging field of extreme event impact attribution, which analyzes the downstream impacts of extreme weather events driven by climate change, such as deaths and economic losses. Congratulations to Associate Professor Daniella Rempe, who has been named the next associate dean for research at the Jackson School of Geosciences!Rempe is a Jackson School alumna (B.S. '07) and has been a faculty member in the school's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences since 2016. She is a hydrologist whose research focuses on the processes that shape water resources and their responses to disturbances like drought and wildfire.“I’m honored to represent the Jackson School as the new ADR,” Rempe said. “I care deeply about the Jackson School and the work we do here. And I am extremely excited about the shared vision for the school to assert its national and international leadership in the geosciences, whether that is in energy, hazards, climate, AI or any number of other important areas.”She will begin the associate dean for research role on Aug. 1.Dean Danny Stockli said that in addition to being a great scientist, Daniella is an extremely collaborative and innovative thinker. These qualities will make her a great associate dean for research.“The role of the associate dean for research is one that is meant to rally people around a joint vision and to lead the school to respond effectively to new research and funding opportunities. On July 4, 2025, the world's eyes turned to the Texas Hill Country. In the span of a few hours, a severe storm had inundated areas along the Guadalupe River, causing severe flooding that killed at least 139 people. Geoscientists study natural disasters all over the world. After last year's floods, a number of researchers from the Jackson School of Geosciences were spurred to focus their research on flooding right here at home. They were all motivated by the same question: What can be done to save lives from flooding in the future? From enhanced flood forecasting, to low-tech flood alarms, to improved storm forecasting, learn more about their work and how it could help protect Texans from future floods. A study led by the Jackson School of Geosciences has found high levels of lead, arsenic and other contaminants in water samples collected from Austin’s Colony, a neighborhood in an unincorporated area of southeast Austin that’s outside of the city’s service area. Residents have long voiced concern about the tap water’s intermittent discoloration and extreme hardness. While their water sources meet regulatory standards, the study found that interactions between the water and the neighborhood’s plumbing system could be causing contaminants to build up and slough off. “If you test the source, it’s going to be fine in terms of contaminants,” said the study’s lead author David Bahamón-Pinzón, a research coordinator at the Jackson School. “The problem is when you look at the household [tap water].” The study was led by the Jackson School’s UT BRIDGES program. Based out of @texasesi , UT BRIDGES brings together UT experts and community members on projects that can benefit local residents. The research was conducted in collaboration with the @utexaslaw Environmental Clinic, the community group @poder.austin, and residents of Austin’s Colony. Learn more at the NEWS link in our bio!
