The TXST School of Music invites you to attend the Texas State University Premiere of Holly Wissler's new documentary, "Dante's Story: The Fight for Deaf Rights in Peru."

Logline: When music researcher Holly Wissler becomes godmother to Dante—a Deaf boy unsocialized and without language access in the Q'eros community high in the Peruvian Andes—a humble field study blossoms into a 20-year story of adoption, love, and belonging.

This documentary is a culmination of decades of Dr. Wissler's life and work in Peru, which started as trek leader in the Andes and deepened through her work as an ethnomusicologist in the indigenous Quechua community of Q’eros.

The film offers many windows into Peru: indigenous and deaf cultures and education, the heartfelt challenges of families, and the profound lack of services and access for deaf people. While it is an activist film, at its heart, it is a story about our common humanity and the need for language, communication, and connection, and what becomes possible when we truly reach across differences to understand one another.

Completion of the documentary’s post-production was partially funded by a Research Accelerator Grant from the Division of Research at TXST.

The event is open to the public and no ticket is required. The documentary will be screened with English subtitles and ASL interpretation. A Q&A session will follow the showing.

Thursday, September 10
6:00-8:00 p.m.
