A polish fanatic and mad scientist, having fun with crazy ideas & experiments on my nails!

POSTS STORIES REELS

#diversitymakesusgreatnailcollab

This collab's assignment was to illustrate your family's cultures, history, traditions, etc. I'm a "mutt," so my mani is a mis-mash of cultures & traditions, with some old family lore thrown in! 😂

I started out with the idea that I'd devote a nail to each of the cultures my ancestors came from when they came to America...but then struggled so hard with how to illustrate them! My family tree has immigrants from several European countries, but the amount of culture & traditions that was passed down was sadly not much - I didn't realize till now how my family's holiday celebrations etc. were so blandly "American." 😢

(I'm using the "multiple captions" option here, so this is continued on the next slide!)

(Continued from slide 1:)

I'm not trying to bash my childhood, because it was a good one, but the "cultural" impact of my family's holidays is pretty much all summed up by watching the Charlie Brown holiday movies! Aside from one religious tradition that was very different from my classmates & neighbors (which I'll mention on a later slide) our family very much embraced the generic American lifestyle.

(Storytime continues on the later slides [and it got a bit long!] so TLDR: I did my best to represent what I know of the German, Norwegian, Catholic, & Irish elements of my family's traditions/ancestry!)

German:

I guess in some way it makes sense that my Dad's side didn't really emphasize what would have been German traditions because his parents & grandparents probably cast aside anything that would have marked them as German during the WWII era. I know a lot of parks that were named after German families were renamed & other steps to "Americanize" were taken by German immigrants to distance themselves from the actions of their homeland at that time. So the only "interesting" German detail about my family I can dredge up from my memory is a story that about how those ancestors got to America:

(I give no promises of historical accuracy, since this is family lore that was passed down!)

Back in those days the ships were evidently so likely to sink that they were referred to as "coffin ships." (Which is horrifying - how bad m by @tygerrosed

#copycatcollab - @nutshellnails 🩸🧛‍♀️🧛‍♂️ bloody bite

For this edition of the copycat collab we were given a list of all the participants & allowed to pick any Halloween mani to copy (or any mani that we wanted to Halloween-ify!) I thought this mani was so dainty & subtle while also super spooky & fun! When I sat down to try to recreate it I did question my thought process though - it looks so good on your elegant nails, but how would I get that negative-space effect on my stained & broken nails? (I'd gotten really good at patching the one that's split too low to trim off yet, but the brown napkin I uses was so visible when I only had basecoat on it!!! 😱)

To up my chances at hiding those flaws, I started with 2 layers of basecoat. Then I added a shimmer topper that I just found at the Dollar Tree, in the hopes that it would distract from the stains without adding too much opacity. I didn't want to obliterate the negative space look in this minimal mani! I also positioned the teeth & drips a bit differently than yours, to strategically hide more issues.

I think this mani is the perfect example of what is awesome about this collab: it is so far from my normal art style! It really pushed the boundaries of what I'm comfortable doing, which is a fantastic way to challenge myself & (hopefully) grow as an artist! Thank you to @audrey_swatches & @aculednails for hosting this fun event!

Also: I had to film my "finger wiggles" holding the camera differently than normal, due to the teeth being at the tip (my normal pose would have put that upside-down!) Oh my goodness - how is it that I cannot move smoothly in any other position than that one?! Let's just pretend my wierd jerky tremor is a result of the vampire attack I just survived, ok? 😆

For this edition of the copycat collab we were given a list of all the participants & allowed to pick any Halloween mani to copy (or any mani that we wanted to Halloween-ify!) This mani was just too cool to pass up on! While I don't own the jellies that were used in the original mani, I have quite a few glow-in-the-dark polishes that I hoped would work instead, and I think it turned out so cool! It's not quite as vibrant as the original, but it was very fun to wear! 💕👻

#PokemonNailCollab - Halloween!

Pokemon in costumes! I came up with the idea of Bulba-spider, and my daughters assigned the costumes to Pika-witch, Squir-mmy & Char-pyre. I almost stopped at 4, but decided Eevee needed to join in the fun too, so it became a Ghost!

Things started going awry right away, as I planned to put Bulbasaur on my thumb (to give me the largest space to attach his fake extra legs) but I got on autopilot after doing Eevee, Squirtle, & Pikachu, & blocked out his shape on my pointer without thinking at all. But it meant that Charmander (my fav) got the bigger space, and he turned out so cute! I love him & his silly little cape so much!

My misplacement of Bulbasaur meant its legs & web are kind of cut off, but I think enough is there to give the idea. Pikachu's little broom is also not really showing up much, but I think the hat sells the witch idea enough. And while the shading I attempted on Eevee isn't showing up much, you can guess both the costume & the character so that one is a win!

Which brings us to Squirtle as a Mummy...which for some reason was really intimidating me. (If you look at my process photos you'll see I completed all the layered work of the others while trying to hype myself up for the bandages!) When I couldnt put it off any longer I started "wrapping" him, trying to find the balance between putting enough on to make him look like a mummy & leaving enough of him unobscured so he looked recognizable as himself.

Then when I thought I was done in realized I left off Charmander's flame! Luckily I got it on before topcoat. My daughters were delighted with the final looks. What do you think - did we put the right costumes on each, or is there something else you think they'd prefer to go trick-or-treating as?

For this edition of the copycat collab we were given a list of all the participants & allowed to pick any Halloween mani to copy (or any mani that we wanted to Halloween-ify!)

My daughter spotted this look when I was looking through your manis and was very impressed with it. I knew my newly-shortened nails wouldn't be able to support a spider the size of the original so I had to change the plan a bit (and there was no way I could mimic your original pose!) So I did the face, pedipalps, and only 2 legs, but hopefully it still gives "spider!"

I think the combo of shiny spiderweb nails with the Grey spider face peeking in is very fun! 🕸🕷

For this edition of the copycat collab we were given a list of all the participants & allowed to pick any Halloween mani to copy (or any mani that we wanted to Halloween-ify!)

Abby, as soon as I saw this mani among your posts, I was in love with it! I screenshot it & added to my folder of ideas, and was not at all surprised when my youngest saw your mani & said I needed to do it next! 💕

I didn't own the exact polishes you used, but I think I found some that gave a similar vibe. I did a magnetic background & velvetized all the nails in my horseshoe in between painting decals of the characters & the "boo-p!" (I'm not brave enough to do tiny details with my "wrong" hand!)

And if anyone saw my recent decal tutorial where I mentioned that I'd rather apply a decal over the whole nail than trim away the excess clear polish, this mani shows why - you can distinctly see the cut line above the ghost dog decal in the video. 😢 (This mani was done before that Fairytale Trick-or-treaters one.) It's dissapointing, but I'd rather point out my flaw in the hopes that it could help another artist avoid it than try to hide it!

When I went to take pics of the Glow-in-the-Dark aspect, I was surprised to find that my Clionadh background has some blacklight reactive particles mixed in with its shimmers. I was not expecting that! I also wasn't expecting my cat to attempt to sabotage this dog mani - he did not want to let me shut the bathroom door & kept opening it (& letting light in) as I tried to take pics in the darkness! 🤣

I love candycorn! Kacie, your candycorn ghost mani was too cute to not try to emulate. Since I had most of the colors you used, I used as many of them as I could! (The big dillemma was what to sub in for the berry shade on your middle finger...I think Crystal Mommy was far more purple than your polish, but it worked ok with the others.)

The students at my school absolutely adored these, so this is definitely a winning Halloween design!

Leo's Little Critter Collab - Creature Feature! 🦗

This month our assignment was to find a little critter being used as the monster in a vintage horror movie. I almost skipped this round because I just don't watch much horror, but then I remembered watching Svengoolie occasionally as a teen with my dad. @RealSvengoolie has gone national on MeTV now, but back in that era his show was only available on a small local station in the Chicagoland area, very late at night. He'd air old horror movies & occasionally interrupt to make fun of things. (Think like MST3K but with a lower budget & more rubber chickens!) 🤣

Anyway, the movie that came to mind was one where giant grasshoppers were attacking a city, and Svengoolie shared that the "special effects" involved filming real grasshoppers crawling over photographs of buildings! A Google search revealed that the movie I was remembering was titled "Beginning of the End" and is from 1957. I honestly don't recall anything of the movie beyond Svengoolie coming out of his coffin to talk about it & seeing the grasshoppers. 😄

But here's my best attempt to recreate a scene from a black & white movie on my nails! 🦗

Thank you Leo @opossum_claw for hosting this fun collab!

(Side rant about these - this is my 1st time trying the Color Therapy line of polish, & the pole of the brush was so wide I had difficulty scraping it clean on the narrow neck as I pulled it out to use. I'm neurotic about wiping polish off the pole & brush because I tend to flood my cuticles whenever I dont [a drop inevitably will travel down the pole to overfill the brush], so this was a big frustration!)

#copycatcollab - Ghostly tips by @that.peelie.jar !

For this edition of the copycat collab we were given a list of all the participants & allowed to pick any Halloween mani to copy (or any mani that we wanted to Halloween-ify!)

Isa, I thought I'd do your cute ghost mani with a different background color! Your gradient was a beautiful backdrop so I tried to get a similar effect by starting with a thermal...which backfired on me when it wasn't very reactive! 😆 Some of the pics look more gradient-like than others, depending on if my naturally cold fingers cooperated. (Which was really frustrating given that I had very carefully painted the ghosts so they wouldn't cover all of the area that I expected to shift darker!)

I did try to emulate your style of "posing" with the peelies on a table, but since I cheated the gradient part of your look by using a thermal, my cold peelies look even less like your work than when they were on me! I do think I did a pretty good job on the ghosts themselves though. And the preschoolers at work were very enamored with them! They kept asking to see the ghosts. 😁💕👻
