The first ideas for our exhibition together began as a Google Drive document writing letters between each other.

The conversation that took place was so energetic and interesting that it became our favorite way to communicate.

Now we open up that dialogue and invite you to follow and participate.

Follow our new Substack for a dialogue between @botzilla1 and @tifzab starting with the Google drive doc that started it all, which contains the initial premise for @tygertyger’s first show, ‘I Sought My Soul’, April 2025, Berlin

Putting together independent art shows is both rewarding and challenging. Months of planning and fundraising and hours of installing and hosting, all in the hope to bring a vision to life, to connect an audience with art and the message behind.
We counted over 2500 visitors in the short three week duration of the show, hosted dinners and talks, deeply moving breathwork sessions and performances.
It’s beautiful to see these projects come to life and witness the support of so many.
As public funding for these kinds of initiatives continues to shrink, the need to support each other, collaborate, and stick together becomes ever more vital

Mire Lee’s (b. 1988, Seoul) work often explores themes of corporeality, transformation, and the interplay between the organic and the mechanical. For this exhibition, the artist presents two site-responsive works: Debris Bodies, 2025 and Tentacles for Open Wound (studio prototype), 2025, both swirling forms that encourage a reflection on the human condition.

Tentacles for Open Wound (studio prototype), as its title implies, evokes a sense of vulnerability and exposure. The piece was created as a prototype for Lee’s recent installation of the same title at Tate’s Turbine Hall, where refined, rag-like forms hang across the space. Tentacles for Open Wound (studio prototype) with its visceral fleshiness encourages an immediate sense of mortality. Bound with rope in a meticulous yet simple swirling configuration, the sculpture floats above ground, limp and long, with its energy focused at its hanging point. Across, the densely packed Debris Bodies marks a contemporary objet trouvé, created from trash found in Seoul.
The debris of life, trash bags, pipes, and metal objects form an elegant structure, whispering gently and slowly within the space. Both works share a distinct roundness
at the top, a sweeping and curling of lines. The curvature above and the suspended figures below encourage the viewer to look upward. This verticality gives the works a haunting presence.

They connect both what is beautiful and ugly about the human condition, while taking the observer to a place of spirit and form with inherent subtlety. Despite their
vulgar nature, Lee’s sculptures possess grace and are strangely peaceful. It is in a space of transcendence that Mire Lee’s power lies. She leads us to understand that only by embracing the grotesque and repulsive, we can really emphasize the sublime in the physicality of daily life.

Qualeasha Wood (b. 1996) explores the state of the contemporary female, living both a real life existence and as avatars on digital platforms, such as Instagram.
Her tapestries combine imagery from social media with religious, particularly Catholic, iconography.

“I grew up as a kid who was really sheltered. I spent most of my life inside. Outside of school, I didn’t like to play outdoors. I used to always beg to be on my computer, and when I got to high school, I really spent most of my life on the Internet. That was when I would say my origin story with textiles came into play without me knowing it. I was really involved in meme groups, so I was using Photoshop and collaging every day while talking to people nonstop and positioning myself in these pseudo-powerful positions as an admin across so many pages”. - Cultured Magazine, 2023, interview with Qualeasha Wood by Ella Martin-Gachot

I Sought My Soul

Presented by Tyger Tyger

OPENS TONIGHT

Opening Event: April 15, 2025 | Exhibition Dates: April 15 - May 4, 2025

Location | St. Elisabeth Kirche | Invalidenstrasse 3, 10115, Berlin @st.elisabeth.villaelisabeth

Taking its title from William Blake, I Sought My Soul, considers a contemporary romanticism, a new sublime in the world. Due to impending threats from war, climate change, disease, new technologies, identity politics, and unregulated markets, the 2020s thus far has been an era of political, economic, and social turmoil. In a world increasingly shaped by new technologies and Artificial Intelligence, the question of identity and the self is fundamentally being redefined. This resulted into a longing for otherworldly and collective guidance. Mysticism, spirituality, new religions, and the feminine divine have become societally accepted means of answering increasingly prescient existential questions.

I Sought My Soul explores the phenomenon of new autonomy within a utopian vision of unity. Drawing inspiration from a Blakean quote, the exhibition at the church St. Elisabeth in Berlin centres on commonality and mutual assistance, which lie at the heart of soulful creation. With an optimistic view towards the future the exhibition aims to highlight a sense of fluidity amongst humanity, technology, artistic genres and personal orientations. In challenging existing oppressive structures, the show emphasizes an open emotional framework.

Wynnie Mynerva (b. 1992, Lima) on their background and journey in art making:

“My path is forged from the memory of being a girl of disobedience: dissatisfied, hysterical, and incorrigible. Society wanted to tame me and marked my body with fear. With time, disobedience always returns because it is my vital energy and it is in art where I find that fuel that pushes it to ignite again and set everything on fire. Much of my work was developed by reading the signals that my body provides, facing its own limits. In this sense, it is essential for me to always explore our territories and ask: Is it possible to make a revolution here? Not only in art but in my life. That question moves all my projects.” - Something Curated, interview with Wynnie Mynerva, 2023

Jacolby Satterwhite’s performance as part of the Great Hall Commission at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2023. In the United States, LGBTQ+ and Black communities face increasing threats of violence. Inspired by the Buddhist Metta prayer, a Mantra of loving-kindness, Satterwhite builds a new narrative and space for the expression of love, joy, and resilience.

The characters in the film dance, perform, preach, pose and sing, uniting in creating a “new world order” where we can co-exist. The work features the artists’ collaborators, such as Hairbone (Raul de Nieves with Jessie Stead), Ioanna Gika, KelseyLu, Kindness, Lafawndah with Nightfeelings, Patrick Belaga, serpentwithfeet, and Ahya Simone.
