I completely agree that “Autism” and what WE’RE dealing with are not the same thing. Problem is this: what we’re dealing with is CURRENTLY DIAGNOSED as Autism. My proposed solution solves everyone’s problems: kick us off the spectrum. We don’t want to be on it. You can keep it the label and market it into whatever you want. What WE want is for what happened to our kids to happen to no future children. This, however, would require admission that our children reacted to SOMETHING in the environment that produced what is being diagnosed as autism. Once that distinction is acknowledged, I’ll GLADLY stop talking. Until then, we share the same diagnostic title so you’re stuck with me. All you NeuroSpicies out there that don’t like what I have to say are welcome to advocate for the acknowledgement of my son’s injuries so that you can keep your diagnosis and we can prevent further harm. Yes I am a straight white male speaking about autism so I highly doubt the @abcaustralia would ever platform such a divisive voice, but just curious if they care about profoundly affected autistic individuals. No punching down at Grace in the comments please, let’s give her a chance to be a great advocate for her spectrum brothers and sisters on the deep end. That being said, I fear this podcast will just contribute to the “social contagion” that autism has become and I wonder if the diagnosis is beyond redemption. Yes im aware autism is a spectrum, it’d just be nice if the the media would ever make the effort to platform the realities of the ENTIRE spectrum. #AutismAwareness by @tylerhudsonmusic

“Non Verbal” “Limitedly Verbal” “Unreliable Speaker” WHATEVER. All I know is I’ve NEVER had a conversation with my 18 year old son. Many parents said the same thing and then tried Spelling To Communicate. ALSO, there’s S2C, there’s RPM, there’s the Spellers Method, I can’t even tell you the differences yet, I’m still a rookie. What I DO know is if you try and shame any parent in my comments for taking this endeavour, that’s pretty poor form and I’m gonna call you out. I’ll block your name because this isn’t about shaming an individual, it’s about creating awareness of the problem we are attempting to deal with: Those suffering, yes I said suffering, with profound autism, live trapped inside a body that doesn’t cooperate with their brain, have thoughts, feelings, and emotions they can’t reliably communicate, and they deserve our help, not our denial that they’re trapped inside their bodies. For a while, @tylerhudsonmusic thought if he prayed enough, fasted enough, believed enough, or found the right spiritual answer, then somehow everything would change.When it didn’t, it didn’t just hurt. It wrecked him because when you’re taught that God works like a formula, it’s easy to start believing every hard thing means you missed a step somewhere.But accepting the fullness of his son’s diagnosis is what finally started to shift the way he saw God, his son, and himself. ContentmentIs it possible he’s content in his world? It’s a question I receive often about my son, who lives with profound Autism.Social media is often a highlight reel. I only show you the good stuff, but I do talk about the bad. And there is plenty, trust me.You don’t see the frustration from the inability to communicate. You don’t see the battery of supplements that keep his body regulated. You don’t see the devastating OCD loops, you don’t see the violence and aggression. I choose not to show you those things because my son deserves dignity and respect. Having walked through all the stages of grief, I can see that this question exists from within the Bargaining stage of grief. It’s a mental reframing to ease the questioners own pain. It only serves the person asking it. They want to presume he’s content so that THEY can feel better about his situation. The side effect of answering “yes“ is that we subconsciously absolve ourselves from the responsibility to make the sufferer’s life better. To bring more order to their disorder. Not for our sake but for theirs, that they may one day have the capacity to facilitate their own happiness, and not be dependent on others. Or better yet, to avoid the struggle altogether. The long-term side effect is that society continues on the same course, autism prevalence continues to rise and future generations pay the price for our complacency, because WE are content with their condition. Future generations deserve more than an our denial and the mental gymnastics of our own grief. We participate in the bargaining to avoid the next stage: depression. But we have to go thru it to come to the final stage: ACCEPTANCE. Where we can see clearly and take steps to mitigate this struggle for unknown others because we’re no longer re-framing it into a story we are comfortable with.
